Grrr, any ideas why my main machine just locks? No errors nothing.

If its playing a sound when it locks, it repeats the sound, and thats about it.

I'm totally out of ideas. I've noticed that its been getting worse and this evening the machine is unusable. I am thinking that it could be heat related and something breaking down, but i'm not sure what to start pulling.

Anyone any ideas?

Probably heat considering the fine weather we've been having.
Open up the side and see if any of the fans are jammed or generally having a hardtime of it (computers tend to have more suck than a Dyson when it comes to dust). With the machine powered off get a fairly gently paint brush and gently clean out the heatsinks/fans on the system.

Depending on your hardware you might find that the motherboard driver disk has a few utilities on it for measuring temprature (often bundled with overclocking utilities) it might be wise to install these and keep them running; see what the system is up to.

However it might be wise to take a look in the event log.
Windows XP/2000
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
Poke in to their and see if anything 'odd' crops up.

It could be that for some unknown reason the sound driver is not installed properly/corrupted itself, maybe thanks to a Windows update of some kind or a bad update from the manufacturer? Hopefully the event log will let you know if that's the case.
