Got a linksys wireless router that decides to drop the adsl connection regularly. Usually sorted by unplugging it and 'resetting' it. Not this time. It consistently failed to work (it was quite hot on the casing). Was unable to log onto the web, but could log onto the IP address and the settings had all changed . Resetting the connections didn't help either.

Anyhoo, ditched the wireless and set up the el cheapo modem that came with TalkTalk and not only does it work fine, it's a damned sight quicker!

Any ideas chaps? Should I buy another router (this ones about two years old) or stick with what I have now? Or was someone tapping into my network? I'm not that close to anyone - at least 200 feet through brick walls as the crow flies.

A bit stumped!

My Linksys occasionally fails to connect; I just turn it off at the socket, leave it for a minute or so, then try again.

Have you tried updating the firmware?

If the settings have all changed it makes me think that perhaps the flash memory inside is/has gone duff or perhaps the backup battery if it has one? Routers/Modems do die occasionally like any other peice of consumer electronics I'm affraid.

Assuming someone had decided to connect to your wireless network it doesn't seem logical that they'd muck up your and hence their connection to the outside world; much better to sit outside or nextdoor and just leech for free whilst you pay.

i actually watched some one try and log into mine just the other day...

don't let him in, or let him doodle about - maybe he'll email and i think he may've been looking at a holiday down sarf whilst descreetly finding a suitable shared directory on his drive... you wouldn't want to ...write a quick script and let one of those scat sites fill him up...

always try to smile at the neighbours these days

any road - yup - had a naff voyager 200 for a bit, moved house, it spluyttered its way off its modem coil. bt sends a replacement, that went equally as quick. did my own line check - plugged straight into the plug behind the main socket cover, naff. got sent a voyager 2500, borrowed some hacks off the web and am surfing quite happily (without bt if required...)

see what's around - they're not that much these days!
