A got NeroVisionExpress included in my copy of Nero 6 Reloaded which will allow you to import video in a range of formats, defive a menu and then transcodes and burns the lot in one hit.
Doesn't look as slick as iDVD on the Mac, but will do for most things.

Nero can not transcode AVI to DVD and burn, it will burn AVI, But there is no setting on there that allow's you to convert them.

non of them convert Avi to Dvd, and Nero Showtime is just a media player!
NeroVision coverts AVI to DVD, and creates menus.

Well IIRC you load nerovision, choose what kind of disk to create, drag your AVI files onto it, pick some encoding options, pick the menu style & music, then hit go and come back in 12 hours. This is in the version I had that came with nero 6 ultra. Does it not work for you?
