The desktop died, so bought myself a tidy little laptop. Came with a wireless thingy built in.

Bought a linksys wireless modem and router to surf broadband around the house. (Visions of bluetooth USB printers and a distinct lack of wires danced across my vision)

Problem is wireless doesn't seem to want to stay connected?
Can link via ethernet from laptop to modem and surf broadband all day, and wireless network seems to show up when scanning from laptop, even says CONNECTED at some points, but seems to drop out an rescan every five seconds, and won't open any internet no matter how fast i click in these periods.

Signal strength shows as max (as it should do sitting right beside laptop!) Never dealt with this type of wireless network thing before.....

Windows wireless wizard goes through creating setup, and assigning wep or wpa keys, but doesn't offer any answers.

Anyone point me in the right direction????????

what equipment are you using? Quite a few of us have had problems with the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG card in our laptops.

Let us know your router and wireless card in your laptop and advice might be easier coming.

Try changing the channel your router is using, could be something as simple as interference from other networks nearby or even other electrical devices etc. Will need to look in the instructions or help to see how to do this depending on make. Also I would ignore setting up any security until you have it running smoothly, just another thing that you might as well keep out of the mix until you have it sorted.

Is this the linksys PC world deal? I had monster fun getting mine set up, but now by and large it's pretty reliable.

From time to time I find I need to re-boot the pc to connect.

I had a problem similar to this recently with my sons laptop not connecting - finds the network, good signal strength but no surfing! It turned out that the onboard LAN had a different MAC address to the onboard wireless. Went to System Information to find the MAC address for the wireless widget. Then hooked up laptop by wire to router and fished around in router menu for MAC address filtering. Entered MAC address for wireless widget,
pulled out the cable and Bingo! Wireless found and connected and surfin' like the Beach Boys. Can't guarantee it's the same with yours but give it a try.

Problem solved, thank you very much.

Basically the laptop was set to channel 1 and the router defaulted to channel 6. It's always the simple things!

I am now very happily typing this from the comfort of my living room sofa while the wireless router now adorns the upstairs hallway comfortably covering the entire house.

Next up...wireless printing.

Thanks again for the solution. Much appreciated.
