Unfortunately I won’t have the opportunity to test it until later this evening.

I still need to remove the ‘SymWSC.exe’ files HijackThis found and you identified as problematic, can I use the ‘fix’ built into the HijackThis tool to safely remove these?

Thanks again for your help with this.

Better to remove it through the control panel "add remove programs" option. That way you get rid of the application files too.

Being the impatient type, I'd back up and put a fresh install on - bit of a ball-ache but should pay dividends.

Get AVG free edition and do not put any Norton stuff on there

This is the route im thinking now, thankfully the only thing i need to actually back up is some music, but again im going to need some step by step instructions for doing so

I would look in the event viewer next....

Start > Run>

and type

eventvwr

Look in the system and application logs to see what's there in the way of reds... Should give us a clue what's going on.

We know it's not malware now.

If it goes back far enough, have a look back to around the time it started to see if anything obvious coincided.

Apllication Hang x 14
Microsoft Intellipoint (Mouse) x 7
Event System x 1
Application error x 3

System log 2664 events
Lots of Red X's/errors
Service control manager (the majority)
Dhcp (a few)

Which are the applications that hang/error? If it's always the same one we could be close.

Edited to add they'll probably have an event number like 1001 or similar which may be useful.

All the application hangs have a category of (101) and the event (1002)

All the application errors have a category of (100) or (none) and the event (1000)

Drop me an e-mail through here and I'll reply.

Once that's done save the logs and pop them over and I'll take a look.

hehe Us computer bods are scary people, aren't we

Did the problem start when you installed the camera after tea the day after Boxing Day by any chance?

I would get to the Canon site and download the latest drivers for it. WIA (windows image acquisition) and STIsvc are hanging since you installed the camera and I think that's the problem with the machine at the mo.

Done but unfortunately hasn't made any difference, just as slow to boot up after a re start and very very slow to recognise the camera when plugged in

Screw it.

Last Measure.

Power off. Get a screw driver.
Open the side panel of the PC, are all the fans spinning freely, does anything look 'damaged' (i.e. clear fluid coming out of a capacitor, scorch marks or a burning smell) are all the cables attached properly? Touch the heatsink, is it warm or burning hot? Is the heatsink firmly attached to the processor?

Are all heatsinks visible clear of gunge?
