If I were looking for a couple of proper beard and sandals* Linux types, what would I be looking at as a contract hourly? Well, contract intially possibly permanent eventually.

*thats a compliment not an insult, I want a deeply technical type of person)

Initially I reckon I'd need

Linux Platform/Config Specialist

Someone to create a bespoke 'version' of a PC *nix distro and configure it to support certain tasks (vagueness out of necessity, sorry) on a PC Hardware Platform. Development experience useful but not absolutely required.

Linux Software Developer

So termed as I dont really care what the end product is created in, it just needs to be able to talk to the aforementioned *nix machine, embedded experience highly valued, platform config experience a bonus.

Ideally I'd get this in a single person but I think that may push the time to deliver out too far so two would be ideal, maybe more if the interest is high.

So what do you reckon on current market rates?

Seems a little on the low side here, but I am on a different continent after all ;-)

Same here to a degree. But I'm guessing this is 'hardcore' embedded stuff, dietlibc, micro-kernels all talking to something distinctly proprietary over either USB or serial.

I mean, if it wasn't, and we're talking about bog standard x86 2.6.x kernel boxxen and just compiling it all from source then hey. Simple enough.

It may be low. I haven't recruited any ubergeeks for a while.

I know someone who fits this bill. Total unix geek and one of the most knowledgable C++ developers I've met despite professing to hate the language ("know your enemy" is his response to being confronted with that )

I haven't been in contact with him for a while but can try to get in touch with him if you want? He's based in Newbury unless he's moved in the past year or so.
