Whenever I shut down OSX I wait for it to shut down, leave it for a bit (no HDD spinning that I can hear), then close the lid, why does that bloody light on the front insist on flashing away as if it is in sleep mode? Obviously the battery doesn't last when it is left like that so I have to remove and replace the battery to stop it doing it.

It isn't the hardware as Vista is capable of shutting down without being a pain in the arse on the same computer - any ideas?

Have you tried zapping the PRAM? Apple, option, P, R when you power on, hold them down till you get the second reboot chime and release the keys. Wait for the OS to boot and see how it behaves then.

Why would I need to do that when Vista can shut down the same hardware ok?

Does OSX have interaction with the PRAM that Vista doesn't?

Sorry for all the questions

Magic_Torch will probably explain this better, but the PRAM contains some data about the machine, hardware settings and power management that's passed to the Mac OS at boot time. Vista won't know anything about this and will be using a different way of telling the hardware to shut down / sleep / hibernate. I had a rogue Macbook Pro in work, it was acting up refusing to boot at all sometimes just hanging before the grey Apple logo. None of my staff knew what to do with it, I've been using Macs since the 512Ke, took one look at it, zapped the PRAM and it's been right as rain ever since. Just try it, the worst you can do is nuke your screen brightness and volume settings
