Wireless connection help, please!
Discussion
i have a wireless router in the house and many laptops connect to it. however, my newest laptop which i purchased not that long ago will not seem to work.
i connect through the windows wirless configuration setup, e.g. go to start, network connections, search for a connection, then i connect to it. it says that it is successfully connected to the network, however i cannot browse the internet, i just get "this page cannot be displaye" i have looked at the settings on my other laptops and they all appear to work fine.
the new laptop also works when i take it to university as it connects perfectly to the uni wireless network.
can anyone help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

192.168.1.254, is the ip address shown when i type that command in, how do i find the ip address for the wifi?
edit: have just typed the same command into one of the other laptops and the ip address shows: 192.168.2.2
does this make a difference?

Typically, routers are set to act as a DHCP server, which will assign all the network settings needed on a client device (such as your laptop).
The range will be something like '192.168.0.1' to '192.168.0.254' (only the last group of digits alter)
So if the range on your laptop is different to that of the router, you will experience problems.
Can you fire up another laptop?
Also, open a browser on the PC & type in '192.168.0.1'. This should bring up the router config.
I assume you are using the PC at the moment?

I don't think this is the solution to your problem, but might be useful for anyone else reading. Having bluetooth on can interfere badly with wifi. It probably just affects one or two channels but I haven't had time to verify, I turned bluetooth off and my wifi connection was fixed.

Maybe someone pointed this out already, but in a normal home setup I'd expect all your laptops to be on the same subnet i.e. your laptop should have an ip adress like 192.168.1.<something> like the one that works and not 192.168.2.<something>.
This means your new laptop might not be set to get it's address from DHCP.

how then can i change the ip on my new laptop so that it will connect to the network. the confusing thing is that it says it is connected to the network with a strong signal but i just cant view any web pages!!!!

Try ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew and see if the ip address changes, if this doesn't work then try the following:
-> control panel
-> network connections
-> <right click> wireless network connections and choose 'properties'
-> highlight 'internet protocol (tcp/ip)' and hit the 'properties' button
Try turning on 'obtain an ip address automatically' and
'obtain DNS server address automatically'
hit o.k, o.k
then go to an ms-dos window and hit
ipconfig /renew with maybe an ipconfig /release beforehand (not sure exactly which one to use here)
then ipconfig /all to see what your settings are now.
If this doesn't work, try setting the tcp/ip settings identically to one of your other laptops and just change the last number of the ip address.
