Started rebuilding the PC this morning and loading in software. I (perhaps foolishly) selected the default settings when installing the modem, and it doesn't work.

I've since found a load of bumph in one of my files from my ISP telling me what settings to use - however I can't get 'into' the modem to change any settings - it seems to be merely ON or OFF, and I can't uninstall it either - if I go to Add/Remove Hardware and click Remove it rather stupidy tells me to uninstall it first...

Hence I appear to be screwed... banghead

What's the secret?

As I mentioned, it will not let me uninstall it. I click on 'Change/Remove' and a box appears saying 'ADSL Modem has been installed. If you want to install it again, please remove it first'.

etc. Is there another way to remove it? Regedit perhaps?

If you open the start menu, is there an option for the ADSL modem, if so then it's probably got a software uninstaller there.
What's the make and model of the modem?

Ahh sorry, you said before you were going in to Add/Remove Hardware not Add/Remove Programs. As above try looking through the start menu, push comes to shove slap the CD back in the drive and it might allow you to remove the software (or have an uninstaller on the disk... often called uinst.exe).

You're right - although I found the entry rather obscurely whilst trawling the registry (as one does hehe ) I gather that the other method doesn't always work with non-MS stuff. It's a Dabs cheapo modem of no known brand or make...

Sorry, my fault!

I do now have internet access and eventually fixed the e-mail too. However despite it being a fresh install of XP, the machine still has a slightly worrying habit of failing to boot, meaning I have to go to 'last known good' which buggers the modem again...

It's been a trying day!

Not clever of it. Poke around in the Event Viewer and see if anything crops up. If not and this is a really quick trick... put your hand on the tower next to where the HDD is. If it's vibrating like a mad bastard... something's bust, if not might be worth cracking it open and reseating everything.
