Ok, I may admit defeat on restoring my old computer!!

If so I'll be looking to get hold of a budget replacment for it. It's primary function is for music - storing it, playing it and recording it. I'm guessing this means I want a decent chunk of RAM (I think the recording software is quite memory-hungry) and a mahoosive hard drive. Processor is presumably less critical? Sound card is likely to be completely irrelevant, as I'll handle midi and audio I/O with an external audio hub. Likewise, graphics capability isn't especially important. I'm skint at the moment, so budget is under £500, although I can reuse monitor/keyboard etc if necesary.

Can anyone suggest a spec or better still a specific package?

You could do a lot worse than looking at the Dell outlet store on the Dell website.
You should be able to get a dual core intel machine with 2gb of ram for well under £500.

Dell outlet. yes

Look at places like Novatech, they do upgrade bundles (mobo, ram, cpu or mobo, ram, cpu, case) that are as cheap as chips and tested before they ship. You'll need to make sure the bits you want to reuse are compatible (say AGP graphics card) but other than that you're laughing.
