Well, I've dropped my iPod one time too many and it's giving me the old "Sad iPod" and won't turn on. Apple reassuringly tells me that this means that it's ed.

Couple of questions:

  1. is it really knackered? Are there any super sekrit methods for forcing the iPod to sort itself out?
  2. failing that, does anyone here have an old 20GB-ish iPod they're looking to get rid of for a suitable number of beer tokens?

Oh dear. Maybe you should trade in beer tokens altogether for water ones, that way you'll not drop it!
As per the advice given by Apple, the HDD is bolloxed.
Time to fork out for a replacement I'm afraid.
Check eBay and see what's floating about, as well as Amazon - I think they had a deal going a short while back. I'll have a quick nosey, hang on a sec.

edit - 30GB video on ebay and Amazon from £130-150. Might check Apple's refurb section and see what they have there too - nothing there apart from 4 and 8GB Nanos.

My nano packed up, took it to apple repair centre who said there was nothing they could do. So i opened it up and removed/unscrewed every thing. Put it back together and the bugger has worked fine since.

http://www.ipoddoctor.co.uk/ is good if you want to be hands on. My 3G Ipod died recently and I'm considering an 8GB Nano as a replacement. Keeping my eye on www.ukhotdeals.com for a bargain to come up.

I assume you've tried resetting it and reflashing the firmware? If it's a full sized one you could have a go at replacing the hard disk yourself. There are lots of how-tos if you google for them.
