I got a new laptop recently, with a widescreen. Every single video that I play be it something I have on the hard drive or a DVD there is a black box around the whole of the image.

Now I know there should be black bars at the top and bottom due to the aspect ratio, but on this the image is not reaching the sides of the screen.

Does anyone know what I can do to change it?

I have a screenshot that I'll upload in a second.

Tthe issue is that the picture doesn't reach the edge of the screen as can be seen. Its done it for every thing I've watched.

Your video player software is probably set to 1:1 ratio, rather than "fill screen". See if there's a zoom option or menu somewhere.

I've just had a look and can't find anything that corresponds. Everything seems to be in order.
