I've just bought a lacie 500Gb nas which is excellent. I've put it on a gigabit switch and it is all working really well so far.

You should be fine with anything from Samsung, LaCie, Western Digital, Hitachi and Seagate.

Avoid Maxstor and IBM Deathstars (IMO) - the only drive failures I've witnessed in the last 4 years.
I had two deathstars fail on me within a month of one another. Since then, I've used WD drives and find them reliable and quiet. I have a 500g Seagate in my NAS, which I find quite noisy.

BTW Hitachi are now affiliated with IBM.
