Must say I was amazed too. The standard SCSI RAID controller supplied with the server was pretty crap and in particular it had poor bulk write performance when configured for RAID 5. If its buffer was disabled (when the bozos forgot to fit the controller with backup batteries) or if the buffer was full during larger data transfers, the SCSI controller became a serious bottleneck and hampered the hard discs' performace (which individually were blinding). In those circumstances, the simplicity of a fast PATA controller and a top end PATA disc was nearly twice as quick. Of course the PATA system had no redundancy and would have been far worse at servicing apps firing a mixture of short, non-sequential read and write operations ... but that wasn't what we were doing with them.
