Hi all - heres the deal:

A friend is trying to get her wii online. Forgive me if some of the technical details are a little sketchy.. I think she gets her broadband via a usb modem, which dials up, as far as im aware of. Theres no router or anything. She has the Wii LAN adapter, and both a cross over and normal cat5e cable. Try as we might we cannot get the thing to connect. Keep getting error code 50100. The connect 'should' work by the pc connection sharing the broadband via the LAN card in her pc. We've tried setting up the wii manually to 192.168.0.2 (her pc is 192.168.0.1) and adding the default gateway etc but still no luck. Anyone else managed this? I just plugged mine into my router and bingo it worked immediately. If i decide to go down the 'buy her a modem/router road will any work with her broadband?

Any help muchos appreciated.. Cheers!

If it's normal broadband it should do - ours does...

looking at your problem first - Have you turned in internet connection sharing on the PC for the usb modem?

Go to network connections, select properties for the usb modem, go to the advanced tab and check internet connection sharing, making sure the private network selected is the pc lan port. set auto connect if you want as well.

ICS will I think start a dhcp server so you should set the wii to dynamic adresses...

hope this helps...

Router and WiFi will be easier. ICS is... rinky dink. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The advice above should get ICS going, you will most likley need to try it with both cables as depending on the capabilities of the dongle... well nuff said.

If she has an ADSL internet connection that is from anyone other than AOL, then any, off-the-shelf router will work and totally replace the modem. AOL, may do things differently and you'll need to double check.

thanks for the earlier answers chaps. I think the router option may be the best bet.. less chance of my buggrin' up her pc that way! I've managed to get a few more details, and have been following the 'which router' thread - so was thinking about the netgear DG834G. Given the details below, can anyone see why it wouldnt work?

ISP is Nildram 2Mb
Primary DNS 213.208.106.212
Secondary DNS 213.208.106.213
VPI 0
VCI 38
PPP Type PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
Framing VC-Mux
Mod Mode G.DMT

She says when she wants to use the internet at the moment she has to click on a connect icon which asks for her username and password and "dials up"... so im pretty sure she is currently using this a ZyXEL 630-C ADSL modem. As featured here:

http://www.nildram.net/support/section/modem-_-zyx...

Again, any reassurances are much appreciated - the young lady in question lives some way from me and I really dont want to go and set it up only to find i've messed up the spec!

cheers

S
