Intel iMac IR

Am I right in thinking that the iMac's IR port is used simply for receiving signals from the remote control?

Does anyone know if there's a way of making this a 'proper' IRDA port, ie for transfering data from other devices?

No, AFAIK it's a receiver only. Can't transmit data.
