Moviemaker bombs out

ok heres the deal. if i import a movie file into Movie Maker i can preview it fine. As soon as i drag to the time line story board thing at bottom of screen to apply an effect the whole app shuts down. No error message. Nothing. Zilch.

I know MM isnt the best thing in the world but its free and ive only just got my dig camera so just want to play a bit before getting any other s/w.

Running XP BTW
any one experienced this b4?
