No Sound on Movie Playback - ideas?

Hi all,

have a problem with some downloaded content. I download from the 'net and play it back via Windows Media Player.

I get the picture but no sound.

I don't get any error messages about needing a new codec or anything. It plays normally but there is just no sound.

I've fiddled about with the volume on the speakers & on the pc, checked that nothing is on mute, and yes, the speakers / sound card etc.. are all plugged in & working. I can play back another piece of content & that works fine - sound & picture. It just seems that some content works & some doesn't.

Have had a search on media player but that was next to useless

any one any ideas to how to fix?

Try downloading this codec pack http://www.cccp-project.net/ it covers most codecs. My guess is that you've downloaded an xvid file, rather than divx and you just need the codec.

Also try media player classic.
Free to download, it will play anything.

Use the videolan player; doesn't use codecs, so there's less worry about that side of things.
Any details of the file type?
