Stream 1080 HD media via Ethernet D-Lan to a Media Player, itunes music server and RAW photography file dump basically.

Reading the DROBO review on PCPRO, they bring into question the USB speed over Drobo Share, so that might not be ideal for my media streaming purposes.
I run my Drobo via USB and stream 1080p mkv files from it with no problem.

However that review is for the previous Drobo, the mk2 version you can currently buy has FW800 if you want the extra speed.

Also read that the Synology DS-508 is very good and aLSO quick, closely compared to the QNAP, but a touch more expensive.

Any majar differences that I'm missing ?

It looks to me that QNAP and Synology are running the same software. I can only speak for the 207 and say it's done exactly what it says on the tin. And it's not crashed or anything yet despite being on all the time. I guess I've had it 6 months or so.

Just a FYI

You might want to go on over to http://www.smallnetbuilder.com and have a read in the NAS section.

NAS performance chart here:

Definitely the QNAP 409 - my mate did a comparison table for all the NAS solutions out there if you're interested:

im still half way though configuring (building an array takes forever and im using an athlon 2500+ with 1.5gb ram so reasonably powerful

the upside of using something like this is you can download straight onto the server, upgrade the network interfaces as faster and faster interfaces become available and back up directly from the server instead of going thought another machine
