Which Phone????
Discussion
i'm due an upgrade on my N95 8gb and i was going to wait until the N97 came out, but vodafone now tell me it might be in September!
The wife has just got a tocco ultra and its a great phone, but if we have the same phone, and as you cant swap the covers, i know we will end up with mixed phones!
can anyone advise on other phones? is the N96 any good? or a big step up from my N95?
Do you have a source for that?
There's a software update coming (most likely in June) and at best a 32gb but other than that I suspect a "much better/new" iPhone isn't likely until end of the year or 2010.
Feel free to prove me wrong, however I see SOOOOOO many Apple product "rumours" which 99% are complete twaddle and just pure speculation.

The beta's for OS3 are littered with references to new product IDs for a start. Details from suppliers seem to have reached a critical mass concerning the specs. FWIW, it's not going to be a massive ideological change. It's going to be a more powerful chipset, and more RAM. (It may be a new architecture) We may see better positioning services, namely a magnetometer(compass) which ties with OS3 allowing turn by turn navigation. Other than that, you can expect the usual bump in memory and maybe a better camera.
The interesting thing may be the product tiers. There will almost certainly be a 32Gb, but that may replace the 16, with the entry point staying at 8Gb.

N96 would be a step backwards from the N95 - it only really adds DVB-H. Which is basically useless in the UK.
N85 - better screen, thats about it.
N86 - better screen, possibly better camera, not yet out.
N97 - sideways move. I had a 5800 for a day, and didn't find the touch variant of Symbian that good, but ymmv.
I'm sticking with my N95 for now - it does absolutely everything I want, and it does it well.

The other thing to consider is the soon to be released Palm Pre.
The bd offspring of a N95, iPhone and Blackberry which looks very tempting.
If the prices from the States are carried over, it also looks to be stonking good value. Add in the interface and the true multitasking and it looks like a bit of a winner. Palm's future seems to rest on how well it combats the market penetration of the iPhone. The bd offspring of a N95, iPhone and Blackberry which looks very tempting.

If that does happen next month, will they do what they did when they released the 3G by replacing all the devices recently bought by o2 customers to the latest one?The interesting thing may be the product tiers. Hmmmmm, I've heard people asking this before and don't understand it... granted they did it for the 2g but if you buy something (whatever it may be... car, washing maching etc etc) and a new model comes out shortly thereafter you wouldn't expect an upgrade.... would you?
I think the argument would be that you would have waited had you known. They never say that a new one is coming out (just all speculation etc.) so how long do you wait?.... You'd never buy anything.Dracoro said:

If a new iPhone is announced (which seems pretty certain, based on all the internet rumours flying about) it's likely to be at Apple's WWDC on the 8th June, which is only 12 days away, so it's probably worth waiting until then, then either picking up a reduced (old) 3G model, or getting the new one once it's released.
I was looking at getting an N95 8gb around last September when my contract expired. Around that time the N85 was on the cusp of being released. I waited and waited for O2 to stock the damn thing but in the end ended up switching to Orange.
Its a great improvement aesthetically over the N95. Its up to you if you want the same thing really but I think its a brilliant phone.
I was slightly tempted by the N86 but I'm just going to get a decent compact camera. I've come to realise that a phone with a camera will never be as good as a reasonable compact, without sacrificing something else.

Just got a HTC Magic (runs Google Android) on Vodaphone - so far very pleased with it indeed.
One point that may be a problem is that it doesn't natively (on the vodaphone release) sync directly with MS Exchange.
This telephone is better than the Blackberry Bold, Storm and more importantly the iPhone. One point that may be a problem is that it doesn't natively (on the vodaphone release) sync directly with MS Exchange.
The iphone is now lagging behind this device (maybe it's really good for me as lots of my stuff is centred around Google apps)
