I take it you're using your mobile for internet connection as well as GPS, if so thats what I did and it worked okay, and tracks me real time. Like I said before though vodafone 3G is useless outside of built up areas (in my opinion)

Ah - no I was on wifi in the house on the NC10.

Doesn't Google Earth work standalone without web access or does it download maps/info on the fly?

I thought the app would work locally, but use the GPS signal to locate position - never crossed my mind I need an active web connection at the same time!

Will all nav apps work the same way? The N95 alreay has maps downloaded and installed so doesn't connect to the web (unless I tell it to, as an aid to triangulation using mobile cell towers).

My undertsnanding is GE needs a web connection and does download on the fly, so you'll need to establish both a GPS connection with phone, AND a 3G connection to the web. Nokia PC Suite allows you to do the web connection between mobile and laptop, and works really well, provided you've got 3G coverage.

Ah - not so useful for Oz trip then as i'm not sure about data costs (i'm on an unlimited data tariff at the mo but insure how it applies overseas).

Any other map/navigation software which does not require an active web connection?

Microsoft Streets and Trips is what I'm using. I'm sure they'll be an Australian version somewhere.
