To all PH computer bods.....

If you have been talking to two completely different people who you thought live miles apart, and don't know each other from Adam for a couple of years, and you find out they had the same ip address, would it mean they are definitely one and the same person......scratchchin

Too long a story to go into.......smile

It's unlikely they would share an IP address.

short answer yes.

Bit longer answer, 100% impossible to be someone else, well no, as isp's regularly change peoples IP address, but its a long shot, a VERY long shot!.

Be do have a habit of issuing the same IP address to 2 customers on the Static IP option. This results in frequent line drops and horrible routing.

well, that IP is coming from manchester, so if one of the people is that way, it's most likely the real guy

The ISP is in Manchester but the circuit doesn't necessarily terminate there.

When running a message board in the past I found many instances where messages posted from the same IP address were confirmed as being from different people in different parts of the country. I think it just depends on how the ISP recycles its IP address pool.

The odds of actually being in separate contact with two people sharing the same IP but in other parts of the country are slim though.

I would have thought that too, but I've just checked and I can see the same IP address in use by two different people on the same message board within 3hrs. I don't think that the IP address recording is screwed, and I'm sure that all 100 of these people don't work for the same company (and so share a single wan address).

That is true, in work we all share the same external Ip address but the OP was asking if two people who live miles apart could have the same ip address and im presuming swapping back and two between them also. This is highly unlikely.

Or Halifax, or Bolton depending on which trace provider you use wink

BT internet has the most complex IP allocation system I've ever had to deal with.

Agreed, it's most likely a recycled DHCP address.

It is very possible to have the same IP address due to DHCP allocation. However it is not possible to have the same IP addres at the same time .... from a routing perspective ... It just wouldnt work !

So Yes, it is possible, but not at the same time smile

Other explenations .. as you frequently see is where you have a private addressed network with NAT on a firewall or boundary router with a single outward facing IP address publically registered.

In the Old days of Dialup, each bank of Modems hosted by the ISP would have a specific IP address range allocated to them. Using non geographic dialup numbers, incomming calls would be alloocated as modems became available in a round robbin affair.

OK guys...

I know you are dying to know the full story, but it is a very delicate situation that could have far reaching consequences...

However, I have been out all day, and just received this message from the moderator of a certain forum..........

Wacky,

I've been looking back at **** posts the first time he was here, and posts going back as far as 2007 share an IP address with, yes, you guessed it,***** Since **** re-joined, he's posted 11 times, every one from the same IP address. ***** posted from that IP address 11 times, too, all of them recently. Nobody else has ever posted from that address. Don't know if you want to run any of that by your Pistonheads guys and see what they think?

The server is not a proxy one......
