How come it is called Notification ringtone in messages and also Notification ringtone in settings and they control different things? A bit strange!
It's called notification ringtone because it's the default for all notifications, because all apps can have notifications if you allow them to, not just messages and mail but also facebook, google+,msn, ... the app-specific ones can be set per app, if you don't, it takes the default "notification ringtone".

Yesterday, due to my provider & location, I didn't have any data access, while usually during normal days I have about 55% left by the end of the day, now it was at 70% biggrin.

Of course, with no data/wifi, I used it less (no browsing...), so less screen time as well, though pretty pleased with knowing that it can do an easy two days if you turn data off.

Can anyone recommend a cradle for it for sat nav use in the car? Is there such a thing?

ETA: Never mind, think I've found exactly the thing. This looks brilliant (watch the video): http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/genuine-samsung-galaxy-...

I have some big universal clamp that works brilliantly on all my devices, no charging included but I don't miss it.

OK now I am impressed. Came out of the bank earlier, grabbed my headphones and they were stuck on my coat, next thing my phone comes flying out of my pocket unplugs from the headphones and hits the ground in a corner of the screen. Of course having just dropped a £400 phone my first words are "BUGGER!" Pick it up, the plastic case is slightly damaged but the screen doesn't have a mark on it. This is from shoulder height and I am 6 foot 5 so a long way for it to fall at what was an accelerated rate due to me yanking the headphones.
yes done that several time, even once at 30mph from the bike. There's a lot to be said for plastic + gorilla glass on a phone hehe

I would like to see an iPhone survive that hehe

Must have been a hard impact though, the SD card had unmounted from the shock laugh

Just out of interest, at 30mph did the phone itself hit the ground or was it in a case?
Why would I put a good looking thin phone in a case? wink
The part that struck me the most was not that it did survive it, but HOW. I swear to god, I still can't find a scratch on it, maybe some tiny ones on the plastic back.

& indeed, for durability and dropping resistance, the design of the iphone 4(s) is seriously flawed, as they demonstrated in numerous tests.

Finally installed Kies on my computer, not really a hassle but I've gotten used to not needing extra software to update my phone after I got rid of the iPhone.
Now on 2.3.5 and the first thing I notice is that the "bounce" on the end of a list is gone, and the blue glow is there (something to do with the fact that Apple protected the "bounce" iirc).
At first it's weird not to have the effect, but I think I'll get used to it quick. Actually I think it's better in the way that it's faster: you get visual confirmation that you're on the end of the list, yet not so visual that it "moves" the entire screen, making it "useless" for a fraction of a second longer.

Anyway, I come from 2.3.3 so I'm curious at what else I'm going to find.

The SGS2 is mooted to have ICS as late as Q2 2012 though :'(.

Edit: some more things I've discovered

  1. Bounce replaced by blue glow
  2. new font
  3. unlock graphics slightly changed
  4. keyboard (swype) changed in functionality (some predictive options, will have to look into them, it also tells you more about what it's doing apparently)
  5. The home screens "cycle" now, so you can go from your last screen to your first by just swiping, rather than having to go back all the way

Ah, I was wondering if there was a thread like this - had my SGS2 for 5 days now. Got it via work.

What apps should I be looking for? Find the marketplace a nightmare to get around!
Have you got the latest update of the marketplace app?
I think it's brilliant -> Apps -> most popular (free)

That'll get you going smile.

Things I love: Dropbox, Whatsapp, and a lot of widgets for weather, time and calendar.

Excellent, although face unlock is totally flawed.
I think it's a nice feature that just needs some work done, like Siri is for iOS.

Also, don't forget, Google TV will have this and then it could be a great solution for a multi-user unlock.
For a phone, usually one user and often in bad lighting conditions, I agree that it's totally flawed.

For example a tablet, that could be a different matter already...

You just have to use your imagination a bit hehe I'll keep using my patern-unlock anyway, love it, quite secure yet extremely fast input.

I must say that, despite considering myself a relatively heavy user, I have few complaints about the stock battery.
In a typical day I will either watch a film on the 30min bus ride to work (or listen to music if I'm cycling), have it connected to the office wifi all day sending texts/whatsapp, while all the time email, weather and news/sport widgets are regularly updating, then I'll probably use it again on my journey home, and call/text/whatsapp in the evenings. All of this leaves it typically in the 30-40% battery range when I come to plug it in at night.

What do others do with theirs?
You sound like me smile. That sounds like a fairly typical day for me too. And last night it had just over 40% when i plugged it in at 11pm. I usually unplug it about 7am ish.
yes Same here, pretty heavy user, calling on bluetooth, watching youtube...

I usually end the day with 20-30% left. I manage to drain that in an half hour by watching some youtube movies in bed smile.

With my HTC I used to leave the charger plugged in when the phone was fully charged. Is it OK to do this with the Galaxy?
I plug mine in every night, even sometimes when it's still at 60%, and it's usually fully charged in the night, while it stays plugged in for several hours 'till I wake up. Never had any problem tbh.

What's the best 4-icon "switcher" widget? I love having the ability to knock off wifi, GPS, Bluetooth from the home screen - couldn't to that on my iPhone! the standard power management widget with 8 icons is too big though.
Just drag down the top bar, you can turn them off in there smile
yes

Had a widget for these on my previous Android handset, but don't really need it on the SGS2, it's much easier in the notification bar. Esp the GPS: open google maps, oops, slide bar, tap GPS and you're good to go.

Are people's facebook notifactions working on their SGS2?
Working fine for me....try going into your FB account and make sure the notifications are enabled
yes

I actually disabled them all because I only want to see them when I'm really checking my FB app (as none of them are really important/urgent), but I remember them working before (otherwise I wouldn't have to disable them).

Hello,
just got into this smartphone thing because the company gave me an S2.
I have read not sooo good things about this KIES programme from Samsung,
have used "MyPhone Explorer" with my K850i and now I see that the new version works with android.
Has anyone got experiences with MPE here ?
Another thing :
I was looking for a case that incorporates a small PAPER notebook,
did not find any and bodged together something from an old calendar,
is there something like that on the market ?
(have read the thread and followed links but did not find anything)
Why do you need the "myphone explorer"? If you plug it in, the phone can appear as a mass-storage device, you don't need any extra software.

Pfft not a SGS2 issue, but having this with my SGS2 now. I'm a consultant so I'm often in different locations, but nearly always for a complete day.

My daily use of the SGS2 is like this:
  • A bit of browsing in the morning/reading up on the news/weather, youtube
  • 3G always on, syncing just about everything.
  • in the morning and the evening on my commute, usually 1h each direction, always MP3/FM on on the bike, sometimes use GPS if it's a new location
  • in the day some browsing, messaging, couple of calls
  • in the evening some browsing in the sofa/watching some movies.
Now this usually results in about 40-30% battery by the end of the day, so I charge it to get through the next day without any worries.
Now I have this customer, and when I'm there, my battery seems to be at 30% before I even leave there, resulting that it'll fall short when I'm at home browsing in the evening.

Until short I didn't know what caused this, but now I notice that it's a bit of a weird location. Usually it has a couple of bars on 3G, but that drops pretty often, then going to 5 bars on "EDGE". I think that it's actually alternating between antennas, causing the battery to drain much quicker. On me previous phone this meant that I couldn't make it through the day at the location, but the SGS2 seems to manage better. Still, seems like a stupid thing, going for the weak 3G signal instead of the seemingly very strong 2G signal? Would this be solved if I turn 3G off?

So... as we know the S3 is coming "soon", why aren't the prices of the S2 dropping yet?

I've decided to get an S2 but I thought I'd wait a bit until the drip-feeding of details about the S3 slowed down sales, and consequently lowered its price.

But nothing seems to be changing (in fact the price on Amazon went up a few weeks ago). frown
Well, it'll deffo drop when the S3 is finally there. For now, the S3 is still a rumor, no release date set and then even no availability date set.

Don't forget that the S2 is still the top-of-the-crop of the phones. The Galaxy Nexus is up there as well. The others are "in the pipeline". Why drop the price already of something that is still lonely at the top?

It's worth it, purely to be able to

a) see battery percentage without plugging in your phone to mains power
b) turn off bloody camera sounds
c) rid yourself of the pointless Samsung bloatware.
You can see the battery percentage with a number of widgets though.
