Bit late to the party but after several months of deliberation, I've just ordered one. I finally justified it to myself because I need something to test apps on (the Android emulator is glacially slow), and these are so popular it seemed an obvious choice smile

As a full-time independent iPhone developer, I've always been a bit of an Apple fanboy at heart, and have had an S2 lying on my desk for months acting as a placemat (Voda free upgrade, 'may as well have one' type thing).

HOWEVER

I recently put Cyanogen mod 9 on the S2, getting rid of all that Touch Wiz crap, and it's now usurped my 4S as my main phone. The CM9 ICS build is not stable yet (http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2), but the only issue I have with it is the video camera not working yet. Once they sort that it'll be superb!!

The only advantage of using the 4S over the S2 imo *at present* is the speed of the camera in general (4S camera is bloody great), and the fact that all my music is in iTunes Match smile

I binned off CM9 as it didn't have USB tethering working. Is that now fixed?

I installed the Ligntning Rom ICS a week or two ago. Have to say, at first it positively ate the battery and didn't seem to be too different.

However, after the weekend it seems to have calmed down a lot. Battery life is much, much better than 2.3.5 that I was on. Is it possible for the ROM to 'learn' about usage like that?

My screen packed up a week or so ago, luckily got the work done under warranty..

Is anyone else finding ICS incredibly over rated? All it seems to have done is slow my phone down, worsen the battery life, and cause more freezes...
Totally agree, slowed phone down, battery life definitely less and some apps crash quite a lot now.

Can't think of an improvement made that I'll benefit from. Would go back if I knew how to.
Chaps is this an official ICS update through KIES? If so I would imagine its Touchwiz and other Samsung stuff causing your issues as I have none of this on the nexus in fact its the only OS I have seen that is as good as if not better than iOS this includes stability and performance

Maybe wait for some decent ROMS

just got hold of a galaxy S2 today as my contract for htc desire expired.
I'm very pleased with phone, one thing I did find a pain was the video recorder fails to focus while on macro mode but I downloaded lgcamera and that focus's perfect on macro mode

I have CM9 on mine and video recording works just fine. It was fixed under a week ago.

Dunno about wifi hotspots or the like, I'll try those and let you know.

Yes using o2 ICS. Have been considering going with a custom ICS rom with no touchwiz, just not sure if I can be bothered!

It's worth it, purely to be able to

a) see battery percentage without plugging in your phone to mains power
b) turn off bloody camera sounds
c) rid yourself of the pointless Samsung bloatware.

You can see the battery percentage with a number of widgets though.

<sarcasm>Yay!</sarcasm>

Why would I want to take up home screen space for a duplication of an icon across the top?

Samsung should just allow you to have battery percentage instead of an arbritary battery level (which isn't particularly accurate, I've plugged mine in when it looks about 50% full, it was actually ~30%).

What is this bloatware I see a lot of people moaning about? I can't say I've noticed it.

No support for Sky Go if you upgrade to ICS.

Just a heads up for those that use it.

If you install another launcher then you have the option of hiding them from the app list if you want.

there is a modified app on XDA devs so you can use it. I think it is in the themes and apps section of the s2 section.

Is there some downside to taking the "just ignoring them" route I should know about?

Take up space.

Still have to signup to Samsung's social hub to sync contacts with facebook/twitter etc. despite Samsung not having anything to do with the process.

I decided to keep the ICS update, it's calmed down over the last few days and doesn't use up the battery or crash anymore.

Sky Go doesn't work nor does my battery widget (which seemed to be causing all the problems) but apart from that it's running a treat now.
