Is there some downside to taking the "just ignoring them" route I should know about?
Take up space.

Still have to signup to Samsung's social hub to sync contacts with facebook/twitter etc. despite Samsung not having anything to do with the process.
The S2 has so much app space you won't notice them there though. I have all my apps installed and still have 900Mb of the app memory left.

No support for Sky Go if you upgrade to ICS.

Just a heads up for those that use it.
there is a modified app on XDA devs so you can use it. I think it is in the themes and apps section of the s2 section.
Which looks very complicated.

The xda-developers site is horrendous for anyone new, it's a bloody hard work site to use.

There's virtually all the information you need in there, but it's horrendously fractured.

Most of the thread titles give me a headache too.

IIRC you download the apk and install it after uninstalling the original.

Not quite that simple Tycho. It won't work with ICS without a bit of the Gingerbread kernel by the looks of things. Just a nightmare trying to get the right file.

It works with my official ICS which has been rooted and has kernel 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505

IIRC the modified APK removes the check for ICS and only requires an official kernel.

Did you see this thread?

I'm running the same kernel with the Lightening Rom ICS. Doesn't want to play at all.

Yes, saw that thread. Still looks overly complicated.

ETA: Can't work out where to get this zimage from or this Kernel.7z business. Downloaded the 'modified' apk but it just hangs.

Did you install Voodoo OTA? You run that and temp unroot and you should be able to watch Sky Go after you put your Sky ID in.

Official ICS update is running now on Kies biggrin

My firmware is the LUX version apparently (though I bought the phone in Belgium, maybe there is no BE-specific firmware).

Very exited!!

Tbh my SGS2 has been brilliant over the entire line. None of the niggles I read about, so ICS can't be that much better. If it's less stable/worse on the battery, I'll revert to the old firmware.

How do I get this then?

I just plugged it in, opened "kies" and pressed "yes" a couple of times.

It's an automatic update but it's done through Kies, not OTA.

OK I dont use Kies ever. I just loaded it up on my Mac and plugged in my phone. No Yes options appeared. It tells me the phone's firmware is up to date.

It also says the region for your Firmware, mine is (LUX), which would indicate that everybody with a LUX region could get the update.

I never used Kies before, but never needed it. I hate it even more than I hate iTunes.

Meh, the upside is I don't need it to load movies/music on my phone, or make a backup of my phone.

I already uninstalled it again, update was done smile.

I am agreeing with you, both systems are bad IMO.

But Apple now offers OTA for any IOS updates they have now, Why is it taking so long for Andriod to do this.

Android actually had OTA updates from the start, IIRC it depends on carrier and manufacturer to implement it. My old G1 did it ages ago as it was an official Google phone.

Vodafone are st, yes.

However, its the Galaxy S2 that does not implement OTA updates because Samsung decided we should all pull our hair out and use Kies.

But then, I've stopped using Samsungs firmwares now, and instead use CM9. I won't be going back.

What is CM9 like? I'm on official ICS and rooted. Does CM9 still have no TV out?
