I actually detoured (massively) from my N Yorks to London drive (in SL2) today to visit Anglia.
It's LoserFest. Loserbury. Loserstock. You get the idea.
The silver facelift 500 snuck in late to the catalogue and is no reserve. The wings are scabby, the front bumper is shagged and there's a big crack in the windscreen. Also the boot doesn't lock closed and the bonnet catch doesn't realease.
Other R129s were lying around with dead batteries, presumably to be jump started (and potentially fry the roof module) for the auction itself. They all had various problems and none were presented very well for sale. Lots of dirty carpets and other junk (a muffin casing, FFS)
All in all I climbed back into my 116k mile 1992 500SL with a feeling of relief and a sense that I had the best of it. Although I did leave a lowball bid on one of them so watch this space.
Why does jumping one risk the roof module??It's LoserFest. Loserbury. Loserstock. You get the idea.

I bought mine at auction, and then found hard top wouldn’t release and roof doesn’t drop!! - money pit.......

Nice ones are getting rarer. My 20yr old nipper managed to write his 500 off yesterday. Very sad as it is a 2 owner car in superb condition. BUT he's ok. Glad he was in this and not his Scimitar
As you say, thank God he's alright, but that is/was a mighty fine car for a 20 year old. This one

Crap description, one poor photo. I stuck the VIN into DataMB.com to see more and noticed option 415 - Glass Roof, which became reasonably common on the run out cars. Pano roofs have been selling for 2k+ on eBay and this one is in decent nick. Other parts of the car are poorer - as if someone has tried to clean the anodised aluminium trim and ended up scouring off the finish.
The car *could* look like this
but until I've given it the proper inspection I won't definitely decide what to do with it. Breaking it is favourite though.

Congratulations ZG, I may be interested in some of those bits (pano roof in particular presuming you aren't keeping it) if you do decide to break it....
The hit 500 looks like a dead ringer for my indie's car, albeit his is a 300-24. As mentioned, if it's a good one and your son intends to keep it long term, definitely consider buying it back.

Saints be praised! The roof works and the softtop, albeit a bit dirty, is near-mint, with the original MB stamped Wopavin windows in good shape.
There's only one good battery between them so some to-ing and fro-ing across the Fens has been necessary but SL3 is now indoors and safe while I work out what happens next.

I know a good Divorce Lawyer.....There's only one good battery between them so some to-ing and fro-ing across the Fens has been necessary but SL3 is now indoors and safe while I work out what happens next.
drop me a line about your new purchase...beginning to wonder about that gold one if the price is right.
Allowing 1K for roof stuff, £2k for sorting the paint, and a couple more for all the stuff that has been neglected.
Before my wife finds out and leaves me I am throwing an R129 party tomorrow night in North Yorkshire, gathering as many as I can. Kind of a pop-up shop too I guess, with the potential for a BOGOF offer.
Lowtimer, mickyveloce and anyone else is welcome to come along. Fox and Hounds pub, Bullamoor, near Northallerton, 7 ish in the evening sunshine.
