Can someone tell me where I would find the colour code/identification on a 1995 r129 sl500? Does it form part of the vin? (further question regarding colour to follow)

No, it is not part of the VIN. However, with the VIN you can obtain an accurate account of the car's build data including colour from innumerable online databases. The colour code is also printed in what is called the data card, which is usually found in the back of the service book. The online VIN checkers simply pull up the data card. Finally, the colour code is one of several three digit codes stamped on a plate which is fixed to the front cross member under the bonnet: but it is not obvious which one is the colour code. There weren't that many colours. What colour is it (i.e. blue, red, silver).
