E Class Estate - 13 - Thoughts?
Discussion
Looking at changing. Like the new shape E Class and thinking 13/63 reg, AMG spec.
Some Q's
What is the real world difference between the E220 and E250?
MPG is important, my days of driving fast are past, and when on a Mway tend to set cruise at 60-70, my right foot isn't heavy, so what is the realistic MPG?
Also any options must haves?
Also looking at BMW 5 series, and possibly Jag XF SB

42mile each way, mostly motorway at a heady foot controlled 60MPH - see real world 54MPG on 265 rubber.
No idea how it compares to a 220.
Wish I had bought a 350.
Interesting; my newsagent just chopped in his E350 CDI for a E220CDI. Admittedly he had the 228 BHP 350, but he said it was too thirsty and his new car is doing 50+ MPG....he is very happy. No idea how it compares to a 220.

Sounds like the E250CDI gives the best of both worlds....?

Based on the C 220/250 CDI, there is no difference beyond using the extra grunt the 250 has, so real world 1 or 2 MPG. Range is 35mpg city driving to 50MPG motorway (or 70+ at 60MPH)Some Q's

Your usage expect around 52 to 56MPG
I have a 2012 250CDI
Superb long distance comfort load lugger
Circa 47 mpg at a steady 50mph on the haul down to South of France. About 35 in London (with the hateful stop/start turned OFF)
Plenty of power and oomph to keep life stress free on the auto route
Get one with the bigger 80 litre fuel tank and to cut down on refuelling stops.
"Must have options". A rear view camera can be handy in tight spaces (although there are standard parking sensors). The 2013 cars all came with Comand as standard.

My E350 Estate has returned 40mpg as a long term (10,000 mile) average, which isn't too bad. You can get >50mpg if you try really hard, but if you're prepared to try that hard then it would make more sense to get a more efficient car in the first place.
The only problem I have with the E Class Estate is that it's really, really, big, it's great for the annual shlep down to the South of France but awkward everywhere else. I parked in a multi storey car park this week, getting round the spiral bits was really tight, and even when it was parked within an inch of the back wall the front stuck 18 inches out of the bay, it doesn't fit in the majority of parking bays which is a problem when you get fined for parking outside the markings. Great car, but I'll get something a bit more compact next time.

I'd agree with this having recently adopted one as a daily driver. What doesn't help is the poor visibility and the tapering profile towards the rear of the car- you can't see the corners in the mirrors. Not a very engaging drive either- other than wind noise and fuel economy I prefer my R129 over it. As a tool though it's undeniably effective.

The reversing camera and parking sensors everywhere help, but there's nothing you can do about the length! For long distance cruising it's the best car I've ever driven, but as an everyday car it's just a bit cumbersome. Not a very engaging drive either- other than wind noise and fuel economy I prefer my R129 over it. We bought one purely as a dog carrier, long distance cruiser and load lugger and it fulfils this role superbly. Around London and side roads in France it's a big old brute but sensors and cameras make its simple to squeeze into spaces. You'd never buy it for its driving dynamics tho'.
