SLK 55 AMG gearbox help/advice.
Discussion
Thanks in advance for any help.
My car has a very jerky gear change in 1st,2nd and sometimes 3rd when driven from cold. This only lasts until the car warms up and then the gear change is silky smooth. At all other times the car is perfect. At first I thought this was a peculiarity of the 7g auto box. However I've been told the gear change should be smooth from the off.
Anybody else have this problem? Also would a transfer oil and filter change be a good idea?
Many thanks.

During the winter months, you may notice the 1st-2nd or 2nd-1st change can be a little bit fierce, but otherwise they should be smooth and that too will disappear once warm.
As mentioned, gearbox oil is worth doing if not already done, should be £150-200 at an indie.
Note Merc charge a fortune for adaptive gearbox reset, I was quoted at least £240 (1 hours work, 2 techs) when I enquired about it after buying my car. Apparently one drives, the other sits in the passenger seat with laptop tweaking settings.

I would have the fluid change done, and make sure the torque converter is flushed as well as the gearbox. Hopefully it will sort the problem out.
Did Mercedes test it after the update? If it is worse than before I would take it back. Might be better having said that to find a good indi who knows what they are doing.
Are you based anywhere near Stowmarket?

It's a shame the MB dealership has not sorted it out or at least given you some advice. If you've paid them good money then I'd try to get them to help you out a bit more.
Mine doesn't have a particularly smooth gear change, especially when my other car has a DSG box but you get used to it and accept it. My information is also that the transmission fluid should be changed every 40k. Had mine done a couple of months ago. My indie also confirmed this.

Thanks everyone. Going back in for oil and filter. They have warned me it could be the torque converter.
Make sure they flush all the oil out of the torque converter as well as draining the box, it holds several litres. If they don't do this you will end up with half good oil mixing with used oil and it won't be so effective. If they say they can't do that it is worth taking it to somebody who can. The reason I asked about Stowmarket is that's where a guy called Alex Crowe is based, as good an indi as you could hope for, who really knows his stuff, and is very reasonably priced.

Make sure they flush the torque converter to otherwise it's a bit of a waste they won't want to do it as it's a pain in the arse but very worth it or find a good indy to do it.V8NUTTER said:

Just be careful with the "could be" and "maybes" when you're paying £120-150 an hour and dealing with very specialist kit like auto boxes.I'd want to be 100% that either A) It'll definitely fix it or B) no fix, no fee. Replacing the torque converter is not a cheap job, my TC came to £550 + fitting at a specialist, I'd be surprised if you saw much change from £1500 from Merc.
Not to mention I've seen very little information that these fail on the 7G's - it's usually the mechatronic.
