Do you just rule that one out of the equation ? do you mentally budget for replacing them or just live with them ?

Saw a 996 turbo (how expensive have they got !) on "LandSail" tyres the other day in the classified, am looking at CLS 55's and thing popped up,

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Nankangs (admittedly nice and shiny...) and getting on for 500 bhp, would it actually move in the wet ?

There is a special place in hell for those who put £50 tyres on a car like that ! or am I being over critical ? replacing the rubbish tyres would add £700 or so to the cost of the car, my 350Z came with 4 brand new "Jinyu" tyres, they did the job but wish I had the chance to try it on the proper Bridgestones or something ?

Actually, can a Mod move this to GG please, was in the wrong bit, apologies...

I'm very fussy with tyres on a performance car and pretty fussy in general. On every car I've had bar the 530i (which I only owned for 3 months or so) I've changed the tyres not long after buying.

Different tyres front to rear seems to be a relatively common and annoying occurrence.

There was an approved used C63 with nexens on all four corners. Not what I expect at a main dealer on a £30k car. Wonder what else they skimped on in prep?

Not much wrong with Nexens in my experience. I routinely buy them for my Range Rover. They are better than the Pirellis it came with from new.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I always wonder when I see a performance car on cheapo tyres as to whether the car has been run on a budget!

I can understand it with perhaps some family diesel tank of some kind but on something with high running costs, I'm suspicious of the types being skimped on.

My other half has an SL350 with optional wheels which have a rear tyre size of 285/40/18 so as you can imagine, not cheap tyres. She had to replace them and I said for the sake of £20-30 difference if she sells the privately it's indicative it's not been run on the cheap. Plus it now has matching tyres front and rear.

As for a CLS55 on budget tyres, I can't see it getting great grip in the wet in terms of using the power.

Half the owners on one of the 996 forums buy cheap tyres after asking for recommendations from fellow owners.

A lot of them just want the 'prestige' of owning a 911, they don't & in many cases can't, drive them as intended anyway so it makes no difference I guess. They're more interested in buying tacky bodykits, 19/20" 'rims', ICE and covering the car in stickers so everybody knows they're driving a 911!

Bit of a shame by the sounds of it mate. They don't need to be made lairy to be great, they stand out for the right reasons but perhaps not enough for some.

That said I saw a chap in a C63 the other day, it was black with black wheels and black/silver numberplate. It would have looked great with silver wheels and normal plate but ended up looking naff. Also, maximum acceleration from 0-20mph along with the noise made him look silly!

Very much so, a lot of it makes me cringe to be honest but it's their car & their money so it's up to them, still makes me cry internally though frown

It's great. It's a clear sign the owner is a pudding and you should avoid at all costs.

Proper enthusiasts use proper tyres, matching on all corners. There is the odd case where fronts and rears will slightly differ on a track orientated car but this may well be done for performance reasons.

The only good thing is that if you have a good example that's stock, as it gets older it will retain it's appeal and value. Where as people with silly mods just minimise the appeal of their cars and devalue them with it.

It seems that light modifications to some cars, like OEM+ type mods can work such as on hot hatches etc. but there are other cars you just don't need to mess with.
