Afternoon all. I'm keen to get some views from anyone who has owned or driven an SLK55 (the newer 2012 model). I love the thought of that mighty engine in such a small package. My mate used to own an R171 SLK 55 and the engine sound and speed was something else! I'm hoping the newer R172 is much the same but with a bit more modern design.

There doesn't seem to be anything else around that price point (£27k) that will provide the same level of occasion as the 5.5 litre lump in the SLK. I've looked at the Boxster S, but I can only get a 987 with the PDK gearbox for that budget (which looks similar to a 2005 car).

Cheers guys!

Ours is coming up for 18 months old now and I still laugh out loud every time I drive it. Its a crazy car. I'd love to have been at the meeting when someone suggested putting a V8 in an SLK!! Then someone approved the idea??

It replaced a pdk'd 981 Boxster S and while there is no denying the Porsche is a great car I was never that taken by it tbh.

Don't get me wrong though the SLK is an old car so don't expect to go chasing apexs as you would in a boxster. Treat it as a hotrod and enjoy the oomph (its a fair bit faster than the Porsche) and the noise, which is epic. Plus always seems to get nice comments. Theyre quite rare, unlike the boxster.

The engineering in the Boxster is first class but i'd say the merc is better built (certainly much better paintwork) and more comfortable, although i'll admit it does show its age nowadays. Plus way more spec and cheaper.

Ours wont be going anywhere soon. Just make sure you get one with headscarf, worth every penny.

My thanks for the insights clarki. I'm definitely set on getting a 55 now, just need to wait for the right car to come up for sale.

I've had my 55 for just over a year, bought it second hand after it was 3 years old. I really love it. I did consider a Boxter or Cayman but at that price point I could only get a base model for similar age car and the Merc has nearly twice the torque. Yes it is more of a hot road than an out and out sports car. It loves A roads but lacks the sharpness on B-roads for spirited driving, that's where I would suspect the Porsche would show it up. But given the limited opportunities to really go for a spirited drive the Merc is generally better for me as a package. The quality and refinement is there when you just want to cruise and the engine has the character whether you are poodling along or flooring it.

Yes definitely make sure it has the air scarf and then a resonator-delete is in order and you get that lovely V8 burble.
