So after years of BMWs im thinking of jumping ship and going for a 2011 onwards CLS. I have know idea what are must have options so would like a little help please! There seems to be two options, the 250d and 350d which of course I would prefer, are there any issues with either engine? I do about 20k miles a years so mpg is important - any comments? Cheers

We had a 2007 CLS 320 Diesel from new, lovely car, smooth, powerful and very good on fuel.

Headroom was a bit limited in the back for tall people, but other than that it was great.

Depreciation was steep though.

What mpg did you get? Any issues that came up?

No issues at all, mpg was around 36/40 which was excellent for a big heavy car.

It was Mrs WR's car, and she decided it was too big, so we chopped it in for a new top spec Mini Cooper S, losing about 11k in less than twelve months with under 5000 miles on the clock.

Taught us a big lesson, would have been better buying a two/three year old mint one.

Not the cars fault though, it was lovely.

I have a 2014 250i and am very pleased with it. It's downside is the diesel is a bit noisy which I think is much better in the 350 version. MPG is brilliant for such a large car I average 45+ on nearly every journey and have seen 62 when I had a puncture and was limited to a 80 mile journey at 50mph.
It's quite nippy too for a small engine.
TAX isn't too bad either around £130 for the year. My biggest bill was for a set of tyres at just over 1K but they are on 19" AMG rims and I only buy good tyres.
I would definitely have another one.

My 2014 CLS 350 did 48mpg on my last 2k plus trip. It's quick for such a big car and the 19s aren't nearly as clunky as some.
The interior is good quality and very roomy for four.
What you must must do is go 350 not 250 as the slight loss in economy is overwhelmed by the refinement .

Sorry to hijack the thread, but seems easier than starting a new one - is there a buyer's guide/ list of pointers on the 1St generation? Will either be an early (06/ 07) 320CDi or if I'm lucky a slightly later 350CDi (maybe a Grand edition if I can stretch).

OP, don't rule out the petrols. The CLS500 is good for low-30s mpg on a motorway run. Positively frugal.

My 2015 CLS 350 will easily get mid 40's on a run, a little thought and care gets it to high 40's. On odd days with A road runs it will creep into the 50's as it doesn't encourage aggressive driving.

Lovely place to sit and watch the world go by at not much more than idle speed.

If I can average 40+ mpg in a 350 that would be acceptable. Are there any known issues with either engine?

Also, with BMW you can get a 2 year warranty for a auc, do Mercedes offer the same?

Thats is you can find one, only ever seen one 218 shape CLS 500 for sale, was right in the middle of diesel's peak popularity so not many were sold and any petrols were usually smaller, or the AMG.

My 219 CLS 500 is pretty crap on fuel to be fair, teens/early twenties, 30 at a push on a slow motorway slog.

Edit,

Thats the one, still available.

Must have options (wouldn't buy another without)

Intelligent LED lights
COMAND
Dynamic seating
Memory seats
Climate control seating
Rear view camera

Good to have (almost a deal breaker)
Rear blind
Ambient lighting

Fun to have (would really miss it if I didn't have it)
Night View Assist

Not interested:
Boot closing
Keyless Go

Look out for:
7-G gearbox... make sure it behaves

i've had my 2013 shooting brake for about 4 years now, done 30,000 miles in it. it's a 350cdi. aside from an issue with the boot closing button everything has worked a treat. it's a lovely ride especially on motorways. my overall average mpg since 0 miles is 37.7. motorway journeys typically low 40's. comfy seats good layout of equipment smooth ride. all cars should be made this way. a very pleasant way of getting from a to b

I bought a 2012 on a 62 plate CLS350 CDI AMG. Lovely car got it with all the usual options. Memory seats, intelligent lights etc. Tried the cls250cdi and found it to be pretty underpowered for what is a big heavy car. Im averaging 45mpg from my car from the 30,000 miles i have put on it! I think for the size of the engine and weight of the car it has very good economy. I have had issues with the egr temperature control valve and dpfs. Common fault with all diesels including mercs... Phoned merc uk and kicked up a stink. They eventually contributed 95% to the repair bill which would have cost me £2100!! Also 7g tronic gearbox can be jerky when cold. Let it warm up and its fine! Go for one with full history. My car was £65k new- have the invoice to prove it and i picked it up 2 1/2 years later with 29000 miles on it for £21k! Absolute bargain. Alot of car for the money. Go for it!!

I would also add check that your car has had its large b service. Its due at 4 years or 50,000 miles and merc would like £800 from you for the pleasure. I got it done at a great independant using official mercedes parts for £425! Other biggest expense as noted before is the tyres. Iv been unlucky had 4 punctures in 1 1/2 years of ownership. Another important thing to remember is front and rear wheels are staggered. Fronts are 255 width whilst rears are 285s! It is impossible to get budget tyres with the speed ratings needed in these sizes. I like goodyear eagle f1 assymetrics. Amazing grip and tyre life- but will cost £250 inc fitting a corner!! Finallly i normally only put the cls350 in sports mode when its completely dry. In any damp conditions you will bonfire the rear tyres with the torque in sport! Economy is the way to go here! If you need any further info let me know..

I have a 2009 350 Grand Edition. Bought it cheap in 2011 (they depreciate heavily) as I needed a long distance cruiser.

I would normally have replaced it by now but it is a fabulous car. The brabus factory remap makes a big car very swift and I get between 30 and 46mpg depending on my behaviour.

One thing to watch is the tracking and camber on the front wheels. If its not regularly checked and adjusted it will eat its own front tyres. The damage is to the very inside of the tyres, so hard to see unless its on a ramp.

Apart from that its effortless to drive and brilliantly reliable.
