C class ABS ring replacement

my friends car is a 2008 C class C180K and it has the usual fault code displays of ABS/tyre pressure etc. He has taken it to a friend of his who is a mechanic who has put it on diagnostics and said the the ABS ring my be damaged/split after having a look at it. Is it possible to see if this ring is damaged without taking the hub off because I dont think the mechanic went that far, I'm not even sure whether he replaced the sensor or not first (if it was me I would swap both rear sensors and see if the fault swapped sides or not.
If it is the ABS ring how easy are they to change, does it need a new driveshaft / cv joint or do the rings press on and off easily, we may have to do the job ourselves now as my friend has pissed around that much the MOT is now due and the mechanic is busy for a few weeks. Also I think it could still be the sensor.
Additional info : my mate says the fault doesnt display until its doing more than 20mph.
