My wife took cash in lieu of a company car just over a year ago. She bought the new diesel Mercedes E-Class saloon SE 2.0 9speed auto and plans on running this over four years (three left to run) when it’ll have ~100,000 miles on the odometer. The first 3 services are on the MB Service plan, the second will take place in March and the 3rd just after it’s second birthday. I’ll be using an independent thereafter - not to save costs but to have a more thorough service including transmission fluid change.

Ultimately, my intent is to purchase the car ‘second-hand’ but with the benefit of having control over the maintenance before it falls into my possession - costs borne by the current owner wink

Assuming I’m aiming high (mileage) in it’s second life what preventative maintenance would you recommend carrying out time/mileage interval. I mentioned transmission fluids - I understand this is recommended at 50k but not carried out by Mercedes in their service plans.

I’ve already agreed to pay £10k (what will be remaining on the loan in four years).

Recommendations for independents in the Midlands area would also be most welcome.

I am about to sign up for a service plan for my e class as I thought it would cover the additional items beyond those in the standard services. In particular the gearbox oil change is what I was told would be covered but as you think not then I am now wondering.

Ive just taken a service plan and was given the following in an email from my local dealer:-

"The Service Care Plan covers the following

·         Service whether it be an A (Minor Service) or B (Major Service)

·         Any additional Items, for example: Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Brake Fluid change, Combination Filter, Spark Plugs and Automatic Transmission.

·         Courtesy car, Vehicle Collection or Fixed time appointment

·         All Service Labour times and Parts."

ETA just noticed theyve missed a key word after automatic transmission - wonder if I can expect a new autobox altogether smile

That’s useful to know. On Mercedes website they don’t go into such specific detail on the service plan and omit the transmission fluid change. If so my £48.59p/month service plan is a bargain as that accounts for a circa £10 month saving.
