If you're getting 80 out of an Insignia Elite, I suspect 60 out of a 220 is possible and if ultimate economy is the goal then the 4 cylinder is the way to go.

For me, the difference in ownership costs wasn't great enough to sacrifice the smoothness of the 350 but if I was doing more than say 20K miles /year, the 220 is a good buy.

Yes, using the paddles will give you greater economy and it's good that they are standard.

Well we've had the car around a month now, no leaks from the sunroof (though no opportunity to open it either!) and we've had some pretty brutal rain up here North of the wall recently.

MPG on the 220d is about 42 overall but it's been mainly doing shorter journeys, and at 8k miles it still feels quite tight. If it's anything like my previous E Class with the same engine/box combo it'll loosen up and MPG will increase as the miles go on. I got 50MPG with ease on motorway journeys with that and expect to get the same with a CLS220d. Is 60MPG possible? I'm not sure, my 50MPG on motorway driving was mainly at higher cruising speeds so 60MPG might be possible if your right foot is feather-like. I only use the paddles on A/B road driving if I'm doing a bit of overtaking, on motorways it's full auto and relax.

Engine noise. Yes, the 220 is a bit harsh sounding, especially on a cold start, but that's from the outside. The soundproofing is a step above my S212 E Class and inside all I can hear is tyre noise, which is actually a bit intrusive from the wide P-Zeros this car has fitted. Which have also picked up a puncture already, at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. Credit to my local Kwik Fit who stayed behind after closing to sort it, and were super careful with the wheels.

Power. I don't find it lacking, but a lot of that is perhaps relative to what you're used to. Day to day I listen to the sweet hum of a 10yr old 1.9 tdi PD engine so hopping into the CLS220 feels like a luxury bullet-train. For those of you that tried it after a 63-engined car it's understandably not going to cut the mustard.

Boot. I got an excellent non-slip boot liner from Germany via a popular online auction site, for £28 delivered. It's tailored for the CLS Shooting Brake and fits perfectly. I'd imagine dog vomit would hose right off. smile

I test drove a '15 220 today and was overall very happy with the ride and those big comfy cream seats! smile

My first drive of an automatic for years so wasn't used to those gear changes and seemed like loads of lag when putting your foot down! Paddle changes were quick and smooth though so would definitely use them more often.

Thanks for the info on MPG, I will be mostly motorway driving so anything above 50mpg will be good enough for me.

Any info on repairs would be useful, clearly most owners on here have bought either new or nearly new so don't expect people to have had any problems or major services yet?

I can get mid 40s from my 350 without trying hard so really can't see any issue with a 220.

I really love mine at the moment.

Any excuse to do a long drive in it.

Loads of tyre noise off of the P Zeros on the front of mine. The PHer who owned mine previously changed the rears out for Goodyear Eagle F1s and they're a lot better so will do the same with the fronts. Have noticed that the Eagles have been appalling on the greasy roads down here this week, though there are a few cars poking out of ditches so I don't think it's a problem with the CLS/tyres...

Yes, P Zero's are noisy and get a lot worse with age and wear.

I'm just looking to set mine up with a set of winter tyres but am struggling to choose wheels.

They should be 18x8.5 all round on the 350D and I'm not sure where the best place is to get aftermarket wheels.

I really don't fancy Mercedes prices for winter wheel/tyre packages.

I'm also not sure if it is an issue if I go for 18x8 as there seems to be more choice and availability for those.

I see that Mercedes recommend a 17" wheel for cars not fitted with sports suspension - sadly mine is. I would much prefer a smaller wheel with a higher profile tyre for winter use. There is a much wider choice of tyre at 17".

Goodness knows what the prices are like.

The CLS 350D AMG whatevertherestofthename is comes on 19" as standard. Personally I'd like to go lower if I could for winter rims. In reality, I'll probably leave the Mercedes on the drive if the weathers really bad and bounce our Skoda VRs off the curbs instead.

Yes, I'm tempted to park up the CLS but in my experience it's quite easy to get yourself caught out a few hundred miles from home when a sudden ice/snow storm comes in.

Not only that, mine has out and out summer tyres which I think Mercedes says shouldn't be used below 7 deg C.

Last winter I did park it up and really really missed it, started driving it in March and got caught out with the snow that caught out most of the UK at the time.

For the cost of winter wheels/tyres - even 18" ones, I'd rather have them.

I think if I could just buy them for a reasonable price then I'd probably do it. Buying a set of wheels, sorting tyres, etc, would probably be too much hassle when I don't actually need a car when the weathers awful. In the event that the weather's crap I'll generally work remotely and we don't really head anywhere visiting. Think I might look at some cross climate tyres as a compromise.

My abiding memory of the CLS when I looked at one a 3/4 years ago. It had biggish wheels, 19” or 20” but at 70mph you couldn’t hold a conversation. It put me right off it.

About a year ago I tried the new E Coupe, certainly solved the ride quality with that, it was very quiet.

Ride in mine is, in my opinion, not good enough. I think that about most modern cars though. I'd like to have one with big old sidewalls on 17" wheels but that won't happen.

In France, however, on the smooth roads they have there it was an absolute peach.
