Bomb and Zippee, what are your thoughts come out of a TVR to an AMG GT?
Hi ! I'm new to the AMG GT R, after many years of TVR ownership.

First impressions are that the Merc is so well put together. Its very well made indeed. No rattles etc. The technology is fantastic too. I'm still pouring through the owners handbook in an effort to understand all the tricks it does. So many clever systems, its unbelievable.

Its certainly in a much, much higher level that TVR's!

Secondly - the performance. Its very fast indeed, and can rapidly get up to high speeds ( loss of your licence), without struggling at all. Bearing in mind it can do just shy of 200mph, its getting nowhere near is full capacity.

I've not had it long so have not done many miles - mainly ferrying my mates around on test runs, so they can enjoy it too !

I like it an awful lot and am now getting more used to it. I have faffed around with the numerous settings and I think I have found 'how I like it' setting. Comfort suspension, Sports setting for the engine, and the exhaust valve open of course.

I do need to master the paddles to start enjoying the downshifts and that fantastic exhaust noise.

My wife absolutely loves it too, and we have already started looking at the possibility of a soft top GT R !!

I find myself lusting after an AMG GT at the moment, probably an S rather than an R as my budget is probably £80K max.

I've got a Cerbera that I've had for almost 10 years now, previously had a couple of other TVR's and am interested to see a couple of former TVR owners have gone down the AMG GT route.

I can't get away from the idea that I'll regret selling the Cerbera. I love it but I feel I'm missing out on the chance to own so many other amazing cars.

Bomb and Zippee, what are your thoughts come out of a TVR to an AMG GT?
Honestly? I love it. I had my Chimaera 400 for 5 years and T350 with 4.3 engine for 10 and I don't miss either of them.
The Merc is a German TVR and very playful in the right settings. It can easily fit a long weekends (or a week if just one case between you) luggage in so fulfills the GT side perfectly. However, it is also a true sportscar (dare I say even up to junior supercar level).
It's very comfortable, is well equipped, way more power than you truly need and incredibly well built. Plus my wife loves it - she never really liked travelling in the T350.
I occasionally yearn for a little more noise but TBH my 134db T350 was getting a little embarrassing in that regard.

As I mentioned above, the GTR is too hardcore for me. A GTC would be great but they are more expensive and for the driving I do I'd not notice the difference aside from wincing at the extra width on occasions.
The GT in any guise is a wide car. Visibility wise there are a few junction blind spots with the A-Pillar and the mirrors but you soon get used to them.

If you truly are lusting after a GTS then this is in your budget. They're the guys I bought mine from and the quality of their stock and service is first rate - https://www.johnhollandsales.co.uk/stock-list/1343...

Thanks for the replies guys. Interesting to hear how you're not missing the TVR(s)

I've only recently starting looking and would need to get a couple of niggles fixed on the Cerbera so as to maximise it's sales value. In the meantime I'll do some research so I know how I would want a GT spec'd. In this regard are there any 'must haves' or options that are not really important?

Zippee made a good point about the blind spots when at junctions. I also noticed the large mirror is bang in the line of sight and the A Pillar too, but yes, you just adjust to it. I am aware of the bonnet being so long and creeping out of a T- junction has to be done carefully until you have enough vision down the road without being in the carriageway.

My T350t was a lovely car with enough power, ( but you had to stir it up a bit to get to the power band), and a wonderful exhaust sound with the sports box fitted.

We do use our cars for touring having been across to the continent with all of the sports cars. Many very happy adventures have been had ! The GT is well suited and luggage space is ideal - i could have had a similar car that had a roll cage in it, but that put me off as it would just get in the way, despite looking rather cool.

Our car will get a short tester run up into the Scottish Borders next week, for a few days holiday, so the luggage capacity will get a test to see how well it all fits in.

Just imagine...............3 x days away - It'll require many, many pairs of shoes and numerous outfit changes. You know the drill. hehe

Edit to add - having spent a lot of time and effort messing about with my TVR's, to get them working properly, I just want a car I can climb into and drive now. I want high build quality, comfort, speed and overall, reliability. I hope i've found it !

This is part of the reason for thinking about changing. I've done 15+ years of TVR ownership and as much as I love them, and my Cerbera has been pretty solid, I'm at the stage where I want something a bit more luxurious and with a reputation for reliability. I've done plenty of trips to Le Mans but am thinking about longer European tours.

Might head out with my son this w/e to take a closer look at some GT's, any excuse to take the TVR out tongue outcool

I purchased mine new in July 2018. In the summer of 2020 I thought about selling it. When I found out what it was worth I decided to keep it and enjoy it. £70k depreciation in 2 years didn't appeal!

I am glad I kept it. It is a great car. I has done 6,900 miles now. I picked up a stone chip which I am having repaired and then it is going to be fully PPF'd. I have not seen many in Solarbeam.

A couple of photos:

I’ve been hankering after a GT R and was fairly close to hitting the button on one and then found we had a child on the way so held back. I do of course now regret that as I’d watched prices come down to sub 100k for low miles, one owner cars and having recently started to have a look around again was really surprised by how the prices have jumped back up.

I’ll sit this out for a bit and watch and hopefully be in one in the bit too distant future!

Funnily, the pricing for the gt (inc the gtr) is still strong in germany but they’re a fair bit weaker in France, there’s a 2017 in bordeux that could be had for 135k € with low mileage, msh, good spec & silver, ive been to look at it and its pretty good.

Maybe because france is not so track orientated as uk & germany and its a pretty hard sell for road use.

Absolutely love the above car! I’m not brave enough for the attention from that colour but it does look good thumbup

I think brilliant blue is my favourite, was the gtr available in brilliant blue?
Back in 2020 the AMG GT-R could be had from 119k euro, and because it was 20k lower then the year before 2019, I thought in 2020 they could be within reach... I thought another 15k or so lower in price... but noooo grrr they went up... so no idea what will happen in 2022... are they still at this level or will they then be lower in price...

One thing will be better for us NL people, we have to pay very high Tax/BPM on Co2 per gram base, but every month a little bit goes of...
sadly it takes 16.5 years that all bpm is off, but still.

And yes, I believe they also came in that Blu, although very rare, not sure your blue brilliant, but seen some blue like this one.

edit, also the later version 2020 designo Brilliant Blue Magno (Matte) Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Coupe

Personally i think the C is the pick of the bunch.

I tested the GTR and it was just too stiff for my liking, the C has the wide arches and same size wheels from the GTR, coupled to the the GTRs diff for track work, carbon ceramics and exactly the same engine but with a different map (S doesnt) so get a stage one and put some cup2s on and its quicker than the gtr.

I’m not a fan of the huge wing on the GTR either, which you dont get with the C which makes it far more stealthy on track.

Only bit i’d add from the GTR would be the multi stage traction control.

Colour wise, ive seen a dark green wrapped car that looks so so good, so might get mine done in that but i do love its gloss grey tbh.

Eta: a long string of TVRs here (chim x 3, griff, cerb) and ive never driven another car that has so many similarities with the tvr, chim & griff especially, fell in love instantly as it was like banging an old flame “D

GTR also has the titanium exhaust system which I don't think the C does although there are quite a few aftermarket systems available so I don't think it really matters.

Romans have just got this stunner in

https://www.romansinternational.com/used-vehicle-d...

Fantastic spec, less than 4,000 miles for a sniff under £125K.

I know 18 months ago this would have probably been closer to £110K but even at that money these are looking like fantastic value to me.

Wonder if they'll take a C300 estate in P/X? biggrin

Nice one, but does such deeper groove belongs there in the front disc?

Went to look at one of these yesterday. Love it. Shame prices are soo strong right now, should have bought last year by the sounds of it! Still very much interested though.

Question for the current owners. I’d be selling / trading in my track car if I went ahead with buying the GTR.

How quick do they go through consumables on track? I’d probably be doing 2-4 trackdays a year.
The car I looked at has the carbon brakes, so expecting disk life to be fine but how often would pad changes be and how much do they cost?

Follow up question, does anyone know what volume they are when sound tested?
Wonder if I could still get on my local tracks?

If it weren't for my GT4 order, I would have gone for a GT-C which I recently had for a couple hours. In the selenite grey, it looked amazing. Ride was compliant and very comfortable. Drivetrain spot on whether pottering about or pushing it. Will be interesting to see the GT coupe refresh next year given the new SL.

How are you getting on with the GTRs?

I'm just about to take the plunge after watching the market for about 6 months the prices seem to be holding firm. 100k to 120k.

Just not sure I can wait much longer.

The only think stopping me now is falling for a Aston Martin Vantage AMR (Manual). It's similar money, sure not as fast, but soooo sexy.

Any thoughts?

Although I like Astons, I cannot get past that front styling on the latest models.
