Looking at purchasing a 2012 SLK and obviously will make a full service a priority, but can anyone recommend a place (London ideally) which would perform a service on the roof to make sure all is well?

I recall reading about a mobile company which would do service and repairs, but cannot find them now.

Many Thanks

The roof doesn't need servicing as such. Just check that it opens and closes OK before buying the car. Should take about 28 seconds to open or close. They are designed to open/close up to 10,000 times. When you get the car, make sure you lubricate all the boot and roof seals using something like Gummi Pflege. To get to all the seals you will need to open the roof to half way and prop it open ( using an old broom handle will work) to avoid it dropping down on your fingers! Join the SLK World forum where you will find all the resources you will need.

And god forbid if you don’t follow the forum rules and introduce yourself or the ex-US gunnery sergeant (retd) will be on you like a ton of bricks. There’s a man who can’t let his job go!

US dominated car forums are insane; use the wrong oil and don’t change it every 50 miles, or use non-MB washer fluid: you’re doomed. And the condition of the underneaths of their cars makes me weep.

Totally agree Dog Star! But some of the UK members on that forum ( like Avel Du) are really helpful.

I think you do Jeff a disservice. Some years ago when I had a 172 SLK55 (before I saw the light and bought an SL63) I met up with Jeff and a number of other members whilst doing a Florida road trip. We had an excellent lunch at a strawberry farm and you couldn't ask for a nicer bunch of people. Yes he runs a tight ship but the result is one of the best marque forums around. Full of helpful folk and little if any of the usual trolling. Russ

I’m not having a go at Jeff, but you can’t deny that he has brought his old job attitude to running the forum.

The observations on the US members can be levelled at any single make forum over there - all changing their oil (for the correct OE oil!!!) every week and having underbodies that are utterly perfect even on 30 year old cars.

Rather than spend money on getting the roof serviced, get a diagnostic tool and scan for codes as part of your due diligence. If a roof error code shows up (current and/or stored) I’d walk away personally. If not, happy days. iCarsoft is a good diagnostic brand for Merc cars.

Other than that, they’re very reliable cars.
