Well there are around 30 on the MB site (all over the UK though) and the prices seem to range around £20,000 difference for similar specced cars! It seems that they lose 1/3 after only 18 months (good for me - bad for Johnny first-owner!).

They are quite specialist with poor fuel consumption (if course) so seem to move quite slowly. There have also been a couple on eBay but they haven't reached their reserves.

Really I should wait another year and a good specced one will be £35,000 (but just out of warranty)!

Hi, average fuel consumption on mine is around 19mpg across all journeys. Motorways will average between 20 & 22 mpg.

My wife has an E55 Est and only gets about 18 mpg. Mind you that is local stuff.

She's had the car from new and contrary to all the bad press regarding reliability there have been no faults. done 12000 miles in a year and still on the original tyres.

Rocket ship fast and good for four kids and the dog. A driving instructor at an AMG experience day refers to them as the fastest labrador on four wheels.

Steering too vague for my liking but I like the wolf in sheeps clothing approach even though it's jazzed up with the 19's and mystic blue pearl paint. Still relatively discreet but gets an aweful lot of admiring glances and I'm sure it's not the wife they're looking at.

Drove a new M5, Superb car but butt ugly and I couldn't live with that.

A difficult car to replace so I guess it's gonna stay for a while yet.

We had such serious problems with the rear suspension of our E55 Est that we got a refund after 2 years and 22,000 miles!!!!
fast in a straight line, LOADS of toys, but don`t expect ANY rewards when pushing towards the limit!

looking at one of these or a KN Turbo as I'd like space, practicality, spec and power.

At the moment, for the price, the E55 is at the top!

I part/x my year old porsche 997 S cab last month and our ML, for a new Eclass diesel 320 sport estate for the Mrs, and a 53 E55 saloon for me. The E55 took me some time to get used to, even tho i chg my cars very often (my record was a 9mth M3 convert i had for 6mths!). THe E55 is unbelievably fast, quicker than the 911. THe buttons on the s/wheel work really well if you're on twisty country lanes, and the gear chg is incredible. The brakes are better than the 911, which is really saying something. Comfort levels v high. I would say the grip is good, not up to 911 standards, and the traction control is exceptional.. expect that it cuts in a bit too often. Only downside is the steering is a bit vague, the suspension could do with another level to give u a harder option, and the fuel tank too small. Oh.. and keeping your license!

Alternatives?? M5 is ugly, and a bit hyper, and interior in my opinion is awful. THe inside of the E55 is a really nice place to be. At 41yrs of age.. i appreciate the comfort! The audi rs6 i havnt driven, but they say its v hard, and i think looks a bit dull. rs4 will depreciate like crazy when the new M3 is out, and is manual only. Jag xjr? ok if you're the wrong side of 50! That leaves the CLS amg, which for me would be the best alternative for a large fast 4seater that handles well, but is too big, and despite that is smaller in the back than the E55, and i dont like the look of the rear of the car.

btw, am really impressed with the eclass estate. As quiet as the petrol, to 60 in 7secs, the lowered susp is very firm, with big alloys and i cant believe how well it handles, 7speed auto with paddle shift on the s/wheel, 50mpg on a run... and we can get 2 kids and a couple of large dogs n the back! If anyone is looking for an alternative to ML, then i would highly recommend.

Spot on Nick.....See earlier post....My wife HAD the 55 est and as you state it is a superb car...frighteningly quick but the steering is far too vague.

She's just got the 63 Est and whilst it hasn't got that massive surge that the superchargers give, they have sorted the steering and this alone makes it a totally different car to drive. I've driven all the competition M5 RS4/6 etc and the E wins for me on most scores.

V interesting, was looking at the figures for the E63 (thinking about my next car already!), and wondering what the improvement was... a bit more power, but it's heavier and much less torque. If they've improved the steering then it must be awesome. I could only think of the bentley cont GT as an alternative (to E55/63) that's as quick, and carries 4 in comfort, and decent value when 3yrs old. Big downside being that u cant drive it fast w/out looking like a dick, and shares the problem of the 997 in that parking in dodgy areas is a pain. The E55 doesnt catch the attn of either the police, thieves... or 19yr old muppets in EVO XXX's. Have still only spent a total of a couple of hours in the E55, but driving it gets better each time....

btw, u wouldn't believe the amount of abuse i got on the porsche club forum for not "USING" my 911, when i said i was selling the 997 due to lack of use. Essentially, i go 3miles to/from the station every day, and then chauffeur the kids around at wknds... and because they didnt like curling up into a little ball to get in, it ended up sitting in the garage most of the wknd. Hence 75k for a station car being a tad extravagant. So the E55 ticked all the boxes. I suspect MB owners would be much more understanding
