I thought McLaren/Mercedes were quoted saying when SLR was launched that they would never do a convertible SLR?
They also said they'd sell 3500...I recall that they explained there was a complex web-like composite frame or somesuch that made up the roof and this was a key stressed area making it impossible to turn into a convertible. Mind you, with Gordon Murray now gone, maybe they will have a go anyway without him stopping it because it's a crap idea. A but like the current custodian of the Mona Lisa making her smile a bit more pointy uppy at the sides.

Think you might be well onto something here.Yeah definitely - with the torque that engine kicks out surely the whole thing will twist when you push the loud pedal?

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking for a while reading the forums, but thought I would finally sign up. I am a student of Automotive design and 3D representation at Coventry University, and have just returned from 6 months travelling NZ and Australia.
Introduction over, back on topic - I made a wee mock up...
it probably wont come in Mclaren orange, but wouldn't it be nice...?
Uber-bling?

[quote=dinkel]In the front-engined league I'd say there's not much competition.
And it sounds like a Spitfire.
It certainly doesn't sound like my Spitfire!

Very informative site! I've bookmarked it.
The SLR leaves me cold to be honest, and chopping the roof off just makes it worse. The car has never really lit my fire and though it might be very fast and very expensive I would not choose an SLR if I had that sort of money. The F1 did the same too when it was released. I appreciated it was a fantastic car, the fastest and all the rest but was just missing something that I would not lay my finger on I suppose.
All in the eye of the beholder as they say.

They also said they'd sell 3500...They only just passed the 1000 mark in February this year, at current rates they won't hit 3500 till 2010. By which time they will be looking for a new project possibly a Ferrari 430 style rival (at least a smaller cheaper car). There are rumours that Mercedes will buy Dennis & Ojjeh's 60% remaining shares in McLaren and produce new cars at Portsmouth (where the carbon fibre bodyshells are made) & Woking.
