What is the deal with the weird creation, the "SLC"?

OK It's not the prettiest thing ever, but it seems to be about a quarter of the price of an SL convertible. I imagine they are the same except for the fixed roof?

I wonder if they make an acceptable banger? SLs are too expensive to use as bangers, old S-classes a bit boring and predictable... but this is something inbetween..?

The louvres in the rear 1/4 are a nice touch, not something I've seen on other cars.

Hi pentoman.

The SLC, although based on the 107 SL, has a longer wheelbase to accomadate the rear seats. They are lower in price than the SL because they just never took off. Not saying sales were poor, but not nearly as successful as the convertible.

This was the only fixed head coupe that Mercedes made on the platform of the SL. It was usually the E-Class (or the E-Class predecessors). That was up until the CLK-Class was born, when Mercedes used the C-Class as the platform.

The SLC has has a pillarless configuration, but the louvres on the rear windows were there, because the rear wheel arches were in the way.
And I agree with sneijder, they are a nice, if unusual, addition.

Unfortunately - as the SLC is rather cheap - many examples have fallen into disrepair, and they suffer from rot, something cronic!
Such as shame, because they have a certain charm.

I believe engine choices were 2.8 straight 6, then 3.5, 3.8 and 4.5 V8 in RHD. There was a 500SLC, but this was only offered in LHD. There is only one RHD 500SLC in existance, and I was lucky enough to see it at a Mercedes-Benz Club Concours meet last year. This one was also rather rotten. The owner did tell me, that it was originally LHD, but bought and sent back to the factory for conversion when the cars were still current.
