Lots of great comparative numbers and text.

Great numbers there, its always a horses for courses type thing with engines. With reports of 540bhp standard and low 600's bhp with cam swap, that LS7 isn't bad wobble

Totally off topic - I wonder how much work this LS7 has had done (with twin turbos added)
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=387719&hw=+%2Bturbo+%2Bls7

This Merc would have quite a top speed, may work out the theoretical performance by creating a model in CarTest2000 (www.cartestsoftware.com/cartest2000/index.html) as this Merc would be slipper than say a M5, with some buyers purchasing on theoretical max speed alone?

I do think Audi compromise their normal cars just so they can make a song and dance when they make a car that's better balanced (R8 or whatever it is) hehe

aah, the Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 - what a stonking motor of it's time! Check this link out on YouTube for this car, and see how well it still performed for a car built in the 60s...

Great video! I cant help thinking it would be a fun car to own today for that occasional moment when u can blow away a modern gti. Theres a mint one on ebay at the moment in the US for $40k buy it now... seriously tempting.

How come you suddenly get labelled a "Hippy" for thinking that one more variation on a mega motor is just "one too far"...? confused
..don't drive a 2CV..don't wear jesus boots...wouldn't dream of a Prius (thank you Road 'Terrorist'-or perhaps 'Tickler' looking at your past cars:
But I DO enjoy ballsy motors & as said above 250-300bhp is adeqaute for rapid progress on normal roads.
Guess everyone's entitled to opinions.

I strongly agree mate - I really do love these old power barges, that were to be quite fair, well ahead of their time.

As you say, at the right speed, it will have no problem in blasting off some pretty quick modern cars.

Arrrghhh! Why do people nowadays judge a car's effect on the environment by its fuel consumption?

If everyone would buy these big petrol-powered V8 pseudo-sports-cars or SUVs, we wouldn't have a pollution problem in the cities, including fine particles. Replace every car by a scooter (ultra-low CO2) and one would need to use a gas mask for shopping downtown.

I'd happily repair my rooftop after every autumn storm if this would be the price for cleaner inner city air. I'd even quarter a Fiji family in my summer house (imagine: all horse boxes towed by a 500 bhp AMG instead of a 115 bhp Diesel engine).
