I had this exact problem on my SLK - dealer had fitted a new steering damper (it's like a long thing shock absorber) and not tightened the bolts.

Spent a fortune on balancing, shocks and a wheel bearing. Then I tightned the bolts - vibration went away!

W210s have a similar issue with vibration at 55-60mph, caused by failing front lower control arm bushes.

I had a quote for warranty for 1200 and got it for 800 in the end after a bit of negotiation - not the mercedes warranty but this was an inchcape group warranty, who own a number of merc dealers and others..... just worth mentioning
