Any driving or ownership experiences ? Searching on Auto Trader I see that a 2006 E500 Sport is now c. GBP 20k for a car that was c. GBP 50k new

I have driven the facelifted E-Class and found it to be a wonderful car. Sure, it was somewhat mature and sensible, but very satisfying to drive: it imparted a tremendous feeling of wheel being and security. It was not a sports machine.

I have also driven a SL500 with the new V8 and it was impressive: almost as powerful as the kompressor engine but without the fuss and fuel consumption. The E500 combination I think would be great: I have been on the look out for a 7-seat estate in Elegance trim and have been amazed at the prices.

I have wondered whether the ride on the Sport model might be boringly hard? However, the 500 has airmatic dual control suspension so that should not be an issue.

I like the sound of the 2006+ E500 estate but cannot find one anywhere on a 2006 or 2007 plate. Anyone any idea how many were actually sold in the UK as suspect not many and don't want to waste time chasing something that is in zero supply

These are fabulous cars. The 380bhp engine a big improvement over the 300bhp one (not that that was a bad engine....). A mate of mine has just picked up a 2008 CLS 500 and loves the power. A journo acquaintance swears by them - took one of the press fleet round the 'ring in 9 mins - pretty impressive.

Heard great things but just cant find a 2006 or 2007 estate anywhere and you need to have an argument with your savings to buy a 2008 the way they depreciate

There is a 2006 estate in the dealer network at £30k with 20k miles. Elegance. Carneol Red over beige leather. Looks nice, probably £5k too much.

Thanks - think you are right though on the pricing. I noticed a 550 touring on a 55 plate up at £27k at a BMW dealer a few weeks back and it is now down to £20k. I think some dealers get a bit carried away with pricing when they get something rare and misjudge the market and as a benchmark I was too late for an 08 E500 Estate Sport model at a Merc dealer in Swindon which had a good spec and sold against asking of £37k, so bet that did not make more than £35k and is far newer.

I can't recall seeing many. And for some reason pre- and post-facelift saloons seem to to have outsold estates by a huge margin.

In addition I guess in the last 2-3 years people have been buying far more diseasels than petrols.

So all E500 estates are rare, facelifts rarer.

Thanks Lee. Just responded to say ideally looking for 2006 / 2007 registered as whilst these are well under list, book suggests they will still suffer a big hit over the first year of ownership so looking to pick up something a little older / cheaper (guess most buyers of these now would look to so some sort of PCP with MB with an artifically high balloon to make numbers work??) . Really appreciate your help and any further suggestions
