I am hankering after a CLK500. The V8 noise is addictive. Does anyone have one or have any experience of them? I have seen a nice 2002 W209 500 in silver, 71000 miles for £8500. I was wondering what sort of MPG to expect.

Thanks

Depends how you drive. My CLK55 (W208) gets between high teens and high 20s depending on how I drive.

It's for sale for just £6k btw...

sHas to be a W209. I was hoping to be able to acheive mid to high 20's on the motorway if I take it easy - ie go with the prevailing traffic flow on a quiet motorway.

Is there anything to look out for in terms of engine reliability etc. I wold only buy one with a full MB servive history, the one I have seen has this. Part of me says wait for another couple of months and prices may come down more. So long as my Jag X-Type 2.2d estate doesn't come down at the same rate!

My car has the same M113 engine and 722.6 transmission and probably weighs a bit more. Performance is excellent. Fuel economy is not bad for a 306bhp 5.0litre V8. I get 23mpg generally: never less than 20mpg and "on a run" as much as 27mpg.

The engine is pretty much bullet proof. The only things I have had to replace in 160,000miles are the mass airflow meter and the crankshaft position sensor. I also had the harmonic balancer changed for the updated part after reading reports of the original parts cracking.

Make sure the transmission is fine. Some 722.6s suffered oil leaks but by the time of the 209 CLK this should be sorted. It is a good idea to service the transmission every 70k miles or so. Spark plugs need to be changed at about the same interval: there are 16 of them so it is expensive. Make sure the air con works: they never just need gassing, usually there is a leak at the condensor or (rarely) the compressor will need replacement. Otherwise, look for rust and accident damage.

Thanks for that r129sl, much appreciated. The car I am looking at has a Full MB SH, confirmed with the dealer (merecdes Epsom) so hopefuly all fluids have been changed at the recommended intervals. Spark plug change has occured, I know that, and hopefully ATF was done at the last B service.

My only reservation is that I am taking a hit on my Jag X type having only had it two weeks! I got it to tide me over as I was waiting for the price of 500s to come down! Now I have found a good one at a decent price!

Just seen that car on Top Marques and it does look good.
Wonder what they would take if cash is on the table ?
A lot of car for the money.
We have seen a 200 clk convertible for similar money but the V8 does sound good and the heart is taking over the brain again ! Wait till after New Year and these cars will fall even further.
Not too many people wanting a 500 at the moment especially with the credit crunch and all that .

There is already a deal on the table with that '500', just mulling it over. I will take a bit of a hit on my X-Type, not the end of the world, but it does look like a very nice car.....and the V8 noise!!

So is high mileage an issue with these engines?

Not with mine: 161,000miles in 8years and counting. I expect the engine to last forever without needing any work and the transmission for a while yet.

I was too slow and ponderous! The car I had seen has now been sold!
