Does anyone know the reason merc don't ever do manual boxes in their performance cars?

I'm guessing history. You can get them to put a manual in - but it will cost!!!

Most performant Mercedes available with manuals:
190 Evo II 235bhp
300SL-24v 230bhp
SLK350 280bhp (and maybe the new 300+bhp version is available manual?)
A200 turbo I suspect is available as a manual (200bhp)
Believe it or not you could get older S-classes with manual gearboxes.
As for AMG cars.... it doesn't seem to happen. AMG are a bit more driver focussed now so it might happen one day; that said more and more top end cars are going to auto-only or DSG type boxes it may not happen.
The SL63 has a special type of auto which is not really like an auto. I think maybe it doesn't have a torque converter? Something weird about it anyway, it's their answer to DSG and perhaps SMG

Pentoman, the new SL63 AMG has the 7 speed auto (i.e. planetary gear sets) but with a clutch instead of a torque converter. It is AMG's answer to the dual clutch transmissions offered by Audi and Porsche. A series of six wet clutches apparently allow for pre-selection of gears.

YEP - When I bought my manual SLK350 (don't like autos) they mentioned I could have a manual put in an SLK55 if I wnated but at a price which was never disclosed.
