A mate is looking to purchase a Merc Diesel Estate mainly for touring and is looking for some advice.

Would it be best to purchase say a 2005 car with 100,000 miles or a 2003 car with 50,000 miles.

He's been looking for at least a 220.

Any advice welcome regarding pitfalls, which model and year would be best etc.

Cheers !

What is his budget? That is the determinative factor. Then he should buy the best condition car he can afford. Mileage and age will be factors in condition but neither outweighs the other.

MY2006 cars are facelifted and significantly enhanced and improved. The 280 and 320 diesels have the new V6 motor which even I like. There is no physical difference between the engines in the 280 and 320 diesels and I cannot see any reason why the 320 should command a premium simply because it has different software.

Almost all cars in the UK are Avantgarde or Sport spec in black or silver. This is entirely down to the preferences of posh sales reps for big wheels which do nothing for the ride comfort. The Sport spec is particularly tacky. Elegance spec is far better suited to the car: the wood trim is wood colour, the ride is like a Mercedes rather than a BMW and the appearance is rather more discrete.

The E220 CDI is not particularly quick but it manages.

After 2004 is better, the new model is much better in just about every way (except price)...

I've had my 08 220 Cdi estate for only 6 months, so can't really comment on long term reliability or costs.

What I can say is that being a post 2006 facelift car mine has the higher output 170bhp engine (it was 150bhp prior to that), and although I thought the engine adequate at first, 6 months later I'm finding it just that, 'adequate', I do wish I had a bit more power and would go for a 280 cdi or 320 cdi next time, the 220 feel like it could do with a bit more power for making good progress along A and B roads, if it's just for motorway and town driving it's fine.
