Audio 10 Fault

Has anyone experienced this before?
Merc C270cdi estate - Audio 10 with Bose sound and amp. (optical)
When you get in the car in the mornings and fire it up all you get from the radio is a continual clicking coming from the speakers. (this happens whether the ignition is on or off.! The display on the radio is on as well as the display on dash however no sound other than clicking..
Sometimes if you switch the radio off the clicking will continue for several minutes and then go quiet.
Now ....... After driving for about an hour without warning you get sound, but it comes on and goes off. many times, until, finally it works perfectly.
I have changed the head set and no improvement.
One thing to mention:: I know there is auto volume regulated by speed however when this is in intermittent mode the volume fluctuates widely. Could it be the speed controller? I have checked the optical wire and cannot see any kinks.
This is driving me INSANE!!!!!!! Please help.
