Just bought a mercedes 240 estate 97 R and only one key came with the car(2 button plastic type). Are the 3 button keys different from the 2 button keys ? as I have my eye on a nice chrome key on ebay which is the three button type so was wondering wether it would work.

The only difference I can see is that the extra button operates the boot Im aware that the key will need to be programmed to the car can this be done mt an independant specialist or does have to be done my mercedes ?

I *think* it will work but not entirely sure. I know you would have to have a new emergency key cut to go inside the new one, as your existing one wouldnt fit. They changed over in 2007 so most cars still have the earlier type, which comes in both 2-button form like yours and 3-button form.

This is what I mean by the emergency key that slots inside if you didn't already know about it -

Sorry didn't really explain myself fully im mainly enquiring about the black electonic key workings.
Im pretty sure my local security key cutting firm cut the spare metal key so no real worries on that side.
I just dont want to waste my money on something thats not going to work

thanx
Nick

Hi Nick,

If memory serves me right, the estates and coupes do not have a third button on the plastic phob. The reason being that the tailgates are too heavy for the springs to lift the "door" so to speak. The third button is more applicable with salons where the tail lid will spring up upon button depression.

With regard to the key cut, the local locksmith might be able to do it or a garage specialist "indi". If I was you and got a car with one key, I would get a second key made and the whole set reprogrammed so that the lost key does not come back to haunt you one day by it falling in the wrong hands.

I hope this helps, let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Andy

Have a 98' C240 estate and can confirm that the key only has two buttons.

Just spoke to 3 point services who have advised me not to buy the keys from ebay as these keys will not work.
Theve have had several people who have bought keys from ebay and they have found that the keys will not work as the are not reprogramable.
Found their service very good ive just booked my car in to have 2 o rings replace on the oil cooler/pump (I think) as ive discovered that ive got a oil leak when I got to the garage the auxlicary belt had come off which they put back on for me free of charge.
