One of the members of my family is looking to buy a used mercedes diesel and has asked for my help as I know a bit about cars although I am not familiar with mercedes(I know BMW and Porsche relatively well). The car needs to be diesel, estate with low mileage. I have looked at the mercedes website and I am a bit confused with the different engines. The choice for diesel engines is I understand, 220, 280 and 320. I read in this forum that the 220 diesel engine may be a bit too slow especially on motorway. My questions are the following:

1. In terms of performance and driving is there a significant difference between the 220d, 280d and 320d engines ?
2. Has there been any significant modification (engine or otherwise) in the E Class model since 2006 (one of the car I am currently looking is a 320d model first registered in 2006).

Thank you for your help.

As a 220 estate owner (170bhp model) I'd say that it's not too slow for the motorway, the motorway is it's natural home and it settles to a nice quiet cruise at high speeds, it's everywhere else it lacks a bit.

Away from lights and on A/B roads it could do with some more urgency, its still pokey enough for safe overtaking but you always feel you could do with a bit more oomph. Its not rough at idle/under acceleration but the 6 cylinder diesels do sound much better.

If economy's of importance I get a religious 33mpg which 80% urban, mostly start/stop and city driving.

Get one of the bigger engines, I will if I buy another!

To answer your other question yes, there were many revisions in a 2006 facelift )easiest way to tell is porbably the front bumper which gained a more 'pointed look') to address some previous glitches/problems, and in terms of engines I only have knowledge of the 220 and know it went up to 170bhp from around 150bhp a few years back.

Have had an 07 280 cdi since last oct. It is fantastic. I presume it's a privately run car so no co car tax so go for 280 320. They are the same price as 220 but offer more grunt and 7 speed auto. Yes there were a lot of changes in 06.

Cheaper to walk in and buy a new E class estate ... Mercedes have major deals on them now as its the last year until a new model comes out

Check out drivethedeal.com to figure out the discount price, used ones seem very expensive compared

E220 CDI is a nice engine and 170bhp is perfectly adequate for that car, its gneerally considered the sweetspot in the range for most drivers.

Since the facelift in 2006 there have been no changes to the diesel engine lineup in the W211 E-Class, but obvisouley now the W212 is out and that brings a new range.

Off topic slightly, what do you think of the new W212 / C207 Va1o??

I havent had a chance to see it in person yet unforunately. Local dealer didn't have any when I popped in a couple of weeks ago, and I had hoped to go to see one at Motorexpo in Canary Wharf this week but didn't have time frown

Judging by the pictures I have seen online it looks smart in the 'real life' photos but not so much in the press photos.

I drove a few different models at Donnington a couple weeks ago & we had a couple at our dealership for training & evaluation the other day. They look a lot better in the flesh & the coupe looks particually nice with the sport package thumbup The 350cdi engine is impressive..

OK thanks for all these posts. Is my understanding correct that the diesel engines will change in 2010 ?

They changed when the W212 came out, which is like now.

Thanks - is the W212 engine already on the E Class Estate series or is it only on the saloon version ? Also what is the difference between the W212 engine and the current diesel engine for E280 and E320 ?

Sorry chap I should have been more clear, W211 is the code name for the current shape E-Class like this:

And by W212 I mean the new model E-Class that has just his the showrooms:

I was under the impression they tweaked/changed the diesel engines when the new model came out, but could be wrong.
