How does this work with the folding roof then? Will it crush my kayak/bike in the boot if I press the roof folding button by mistake? hehe

The car must be prepared (whether ex works or retrofitted) for the roof rack. At the top of the 'A' pillars and on the rear wings there will be little flaps which conceal holes into which the roof rack is plugged.

I would imagine that operation of the vario roof is disabled when the roof rack is in place (I do not know this for certain, though). I suppose it is conceivable that the roof rack will be shaped so as to allow enough clearance for roof operation but I doubt it.

If it is the same system as was available for the r170, the roof rack could be used with the roof up or down.

Interesting, thanks. I wonder how it would disable the roof mechanism? Maybe those sockets for the roof rack in the rear wings are "live" in that they contain a switch to disable the roof?

My SL has the roof rack hard-points and I wondered how they worked, so that pic is quite interesting. Doesn't look as daft as I thought.

I can't tell from the parts catalogue whether the plugs would be live. It wouldn't surprise me because in my experience Mercedes accessories are beautifully resolved and thoroughly over-engineered. The more I look at it, though, the more I think the roof can probably fold without fouling the rack.
